I ask as I'm considering a particular one and am concerned by the quality I've seen just about everywhere, presumably connected to the same source/supply to others and in particular the Sony's and Phillips.

People who have any make or model Plasma/LCD will tell you to go for than one & avoid the other one.

I have an 18month old LG plasma & think its the ants pants but I would look around at other makes & models as well now the technology has improved in Both Plasma/LCD.

18months-2yrs ago I wouldn't touch LCD because of the Std Def viewing, but now I would consider it. At that time Panasonic & Pioneer where having problems with there Plasma's. So the best thing to do is view a few sets & make up you own mind, I have also seen some pretty stunning Samsung screens as well.

LG still have that stigma attached to their name, but they are a competent electronics company. As with all manufacturers that provide electronic equipment they all have failure rates and complication issues with their equipment, some more than others, but these are normally the not so well known brands that you find in the supermarkets.

You only have to visit the various message boards to see all the major manufacturers listed there where owners are reporting minor > major issues with the set they own.

Yes you need confidence in what you buy, so try and do a fair amount of research, do a google search to see if there are any major concerns with a particular set, try and get a demo with the source(s) you will be viewing at home.

When you are spending a grand on a screen you want more than 'competent'

List what your budget is, what your viewing distance is, what size you are after, what you watch a lot of (sport, films or freeview etc) if you hook up any consoles (PS3 or 360) what sources you currently have hooked up (Sky+ box or Virgin media cable box etc) and if you have or are planning on getting an HD source.

It is hard to recommend TV's when people give you no information and just say 'is this LG/Samsung/Toshiba good?'

You can recommend the same 'good' TV's (Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer etc) at a push, but it isn't a 'one size fits all' and more info is needed.

Yeah, you want a big brand name like Pioneer, Panasonic on the front.

Just best to say 'avoid' if you have no information then.

Historically LG stuff was pretty naff, so we don't touch it, but talking to dealers who do it's still not very reliable and the service isn't much good either. But, like anything else, it's your choice what you buy - and it may be wonderful and last for years and years.

Really it's all down to how large your sample is, if you have one set it's either 100% OK or 100% duff - only with a large sample can you compare reliability.

Personally I'd rate LG like this:

Best: Panasonic/Sony/Pioneer
Good: LG/Samsung
Cheapo: Acoustic Solutions/Alba/Bush/Logik/Wharfdale

Obviously there's many not listed but that's my rough guide!

(I have a 22" LG which isn't bad at all as LCD TVs go, fair results all round as TV, PC Monitor and AV inputs like Sky, DVD etc but it does have weedy sound)

I got a 37" LG at Xmas. Only bought it because it was in the sale and the wife wanted something larger than 32". Wasn't bothered either way about the brand. So far have been extremely impressed, especially with the quality of the SD picture through the integrated freeview. The onboard upscaling seems to work extremely well. That said, I suspect that these days any big brand LCD/Plasma is going to look and work pretty well so I would hunt around for the best price for the size you are after.

I got a LG lcd tv(42 inch 1080p) just after new year, I am very pleased with it, using a ps3 the high definition looks amazing, games with the xbox, just stand out on the screen

the inbuilt freeview works well, the picture quality with sky tv is very good, every one who see's the tv picture is inpressed with the quality of the picture, over all I would give it 9/10. the only little niggle I find is that it does not auto switch when you turn say sky on, or the dvd, you have to manually select the input on the remote

would recommend a LG tv to anyone, yes there might be better TV's out there, but for the money LG's are fine

LG LCDs are the only ones I think even remotely compare to the Sony Braivias.

I have a 47" and 32" LG LCD sets, both are top notch, I have a lot of LG products and have had no reliability issues at all. One of my LG appliances - fridge/freezer - was dead on arrival, called LG and they immediatley aranged for it to be replaced.

Samsung sets have an ok picture, but their HDMI connections are useless if connecting to a PC, whereas the LG and Sony ones work perfectly with a PC via HDMI.

What is the problem?

I wouldn't recommend them the LG if they asked if it was any good, like my first post stated.

But they aren't to know that, there are Sony models and Pioneer models I wouldn't recommend, LG hasn't got the monopoly on sub-standard ascreens.

Incorrect I'm afraid.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Samsung and Phillips are all better than LG and closer to Sony (Panasonic I'd have over Sony)

Can't agree, samsung sets are garbage, and i dont rate the pictures on the others at all. Having recently purchased a new LG and done plenty of research on them and then side by side comparisons, the only one whose pic quality superceeded the LG was the Sony Bravias, and that was marginal.

I think thats why we call it personal choice guys, I think the choice was easier when we bought our PDP 18months ago because the Std Def PQ on LCDs was a lot worse than Plasma so that part of the decision was easier.
Now days If I would have to pick again I would have to research again & consider most of the brands & LCD vs Plasma.

People say Pioneer this & Panasonic that but they along with LG & Samsung have had there share of problems with flat panel screens. If people say Currys or LG service sucks then I have had nothing but good service from them & had my small red sparkle problem fixed ASAP with no questions asked & the guys who came out where nice & friendly.

I would rate TVs like this

Top brands = Pioneer, Fujitsu, Sony, (Panasonic just)
Good Value for money= Samsung, LG, (Phillips ? not sure)
Average-bottom = Bush, Teco & other store own brands.

Not sure where to put Toshiba same as Philips & sorry to the Panasonic lovers but they are between the top 2 really.
This rating is also TVs not commercial panels.

Just my opinion.

Hi

I am a neewbie but for what it's worth I have a 50" LG plasma which I have had for more than 2 years.

It is used a lot both for TV and Wii activities.

It has never failed or given any problem.

I would buy an LG again.

However, I am currently looking for another 50" for another room and would not automatically go for LG, despite the fact that there have been no issues. I would still have an open mind and strongly consider some of the Panasonics I have sen.

However, LG stuff is on the market for very little money at the moment and that can be persuasive given the need to update tv's as technology develops.....the lower cost of the LG does help in that case.

Best wishes

Ray

For the most part people buy based upon either experience, recommendation and/or brand recognition.

LG seems to suffer primarily with regards to brand recognition, however this is strange considering they are probably bigger than Panasonic, Pioneer etc in global terms just not in brand awareness.

How can you take a company called "Lucky Goldstar" seriously?

Having produced crap for decades, even if they are now making decent stuff (and I've no opinion either way) you can't get rid of the stigma of their earlier problems.
