New set of pans
spang
30-01-2008
I'm looking for a new set of pans, and have no idea which to buy. I'm looking at getting some stainless steel ones, and someone told me Robert Dyas do good deals and I have been looking on there and found a 5 piece Stellar 1000 pan set for £70, which are about £140 in my local cookery shop. Are these decent pans, or are there any others that someone could recommend for about £50-£80? Thanks.

That seems like a good offer. I have some Stellar pans and find them good. I have that milk pan but never use it for milk, usually for gravy or making sauces. It's very useful.

I also like the look of the James Martin Lamina set on that site.

I have had Stellar pans in the past and found them very good, and at that price you can't really go wrong.
I have used Le Creuset 3-ply stainless steel pans for the last 6-7 years and they cook like a dream and still look like new. A bit more than you want to spend but well worth it. I also have a Viking saute pan I picked up in the US, a bit pricey but I know i'll never have to buy another.
Designer chefs pans are just to make said chefs money and are no better than any other pans of equivalent (sometimes lower) price. You really need to feel the weight of the pans and make sure of a good heavy bottom for even heat conduction.

Analon saucepans are brilliant. they clean so easily......I bought some in Debenhams I think they were about £60 reduced but usually sell for a much higher price.

I also have Le Creset saucepans and gratin dishes which I have had since the seventies and they are still going strong

I've found some info on the web about the Analon pans being good, but cannot find any at a reduced price, same with the Le Creuset. Not knowing a single thing about pans, I was worried that they were a crap make.

I was a bit put off that on other sites they are for sale on other sites for around £100-£120 but with RRP of around £200-£350. Things like that make me suspicious, like those clearance auctions in various hotels around the country.

I have done some research and the £70 ones are the Stellar 1000s, and the James Martin ones seem good as well.

One last question, probably a bit too technical, which is better? The £70 Stellar 1000s have 6.7mm fully encapsulated thermic bases, while the Lamina ones are tri-ply(?), and I think the material goes up the sides rather than just being on the bases.

The last bit I wrote makes no sense to me, I just found the info from various sites. Is one better that the other? Or is it just marketing crap?

Also if anyone is interested there is a 10% off code for Robert Dyas I found: TBF122. Hope it's okay posting it. It does seem to work, I tried a pretend order up to putting my card details in.

I have a set of Berndes stainless steel pans, had them for about 12 years now, I'll be worn out before they are, they'll last forever.

You may have already bought some by now, but check out the "Circulon" range by Meyer. They are pro-cookware at its best, and we got our full set for £94 inc. p&p from a seller on eBay (brand new with manufacturer's guarantee). They are the best saucepans we have ever had

I bought some copper bottomed Prestige ones a few years back, and they are brilliant - weren't cheap mind, about £30 a pot, but well worth it - they look like they will last forever.

I am desperate for some new pans. My saucepans .... well, even rice in boiling water sticks to the bottom of them !!! My frying pans have barely any non stick on them.

I made a mistake though of being desperate, and bought some cheap pans from woolworths. Soooo not a good idea. They are appaulingly bad, and everything sticks to them.

I really need to invest in a good set. Normally i ask my parents for christmas for things like this, but they do 'like a bargain' and often they buy me stuff that isnt fit for use !!

Non stick is such a con. Buy good stainless steel copper bottomed pans. You can't go wrong. I'm wracking my brains trying to think of the name of the pan set I have. Have had it five years now and it's still good as new, and nothing sticks to them. Got it from Bid TV too.

Well, if it does come to mine, let me know.

I saw some pans for sale in the sunday paper the other week. They were prestige I think. They should of been hundreds of pounds, but were half price. It was tempting !!

I have replaced my pans with le creuset over the years and will never go back to anythign else, they really do make a difference.

For a frying pan I use the Tefal redspot ones, I have 5 in different sizes and they are great too

Finally remembered to look! They're called Dome, and I saw on the weekend that Bid TV had a 7 piece set on, starting price was £140, and they went for under £35. They also come with a 25 year guarantee. I know that Bid/Price Drop can sell some crap from time to time, but my pots are as good as new 5 odd year later, and don't look like failing me any time soon!
