What's the best way to get front row (or close to front row) tickets? I've tried phoning up at 9am on the dot before but still end up at the back. Are they only available through touts or if you're mates with the band?

Depends what gig it is.

Most of the gigs I've been to are standing only anyway, so you just get to the venue early and head straight to the front.

That said, I tend to spend most gigs next to the bar now anyway.

I have found that being either a member of their fan club or forums/newsletter you get heads up pre-sales. I had tickets for Rush on the R30 tour, which were pre-sale and was pretty near the front.

As mentioned it depends on the venue and the band, there might not be seating so getting there early should get you to the front. If its standing only, there is always the old stand-by; elbows (to the ribs) and feet (to stamp on) to get you to the front.

I prefer being a few rows back from the front, if it's a standing gig, as you tend to get crushed against the barrier.

It's a lot less painful being crushed against the person in front of you and you're still close to the action

I've always got my front rows by using the Internet at 9am

For Take That front blocks were given to people who camped at the box offices the night before. Front row seating is for competition winners etc.
For standing gigs get there nice and early and leg it to the front!

Ooo but then if everyone around you starts jumping you get bashed around and can feasibly end up on the floor with people bouncing on your head.

I think it's better on the barrier, you can push everyone back to get a little bit of breathing space, whilst feeling v strong and such.

Pre-sales is the way to get them. Go on the websites of the bands you like and register on there, some will make you pay but a lot are free.

Sometimes a lot of the good seats near the front are set aside as production seats and not released until nearer to the date once the stage layout is known. Also the ticket agencies sell from the back forwards for some venues and events. I've been on Ticketmaster at 9am and clicked best available for seats on stadium gigs and it throws up seats at the back at the opposite end of the stadium to the stage:wait an hour or two depending on who the artist is and how fast the gig is selling and you'll find it moves round and forwards so you can get seats on the side tiers nearer the stage. Last year I got pitch seating for Genesis at Twickenham three hours after the on-sale,whereas at 9am best available was offering seats at the back of the North Stand!

The best way is not to choose 'best available' on ticketmaster, but to choose either the highest price option (if there are different tiers of prices) or choose that you want to be in the floor section (or select both if possible). If you do this at 9am then there is a good chance you'll be close to front. Best available tends not to give you the actual best available seats...

I got front row Take That tickets a few months after they came out...checked ticketmaster most days, and they released extra ones after a while.
