My daughter is about to get a new phone and is keen to go with 3, as they are offering free MSN.

Does anyone have this on 3? Is it really free, or are there any hidden costs/pitfalls that we should be aware of?

It's free and they give a 'Fair usage policy'. Think it's 6,000 instant messages a month. Is she going with Contract or Pay as you go?

They did publicise that it would only be free on Prepay till the end of 2007, but they MAY still be allowing it. Any vouch for this?

She would be on contract.

The ads said that MSN would be free "for the duration of the contract". They originally said that you had to sign up by end Jan, but have changed that this week to end Feb.

Dumb question, but how can it be free? Aren't you dialling an internet connection each time you use it? They are just absorbing this cost?

Unlike some other networks, 3 handsets like (and some insist) to be connected to the internet at all times.

This will be 3's own Server, etc so yes while you're on-line (NOT dial up, mind) any MSN or most things like video news, etc within 'Today on 3' are completely free.

See it like broadband. That stays connected all the time, but you don't pay more for MSN popping up every so often.

MSN really is free. Honest!

Definitely free, I use it all the time. If your daughter gets an X-Series compatible phone she can sign up to X-Series silver (£5/month) and make Skype Voice calls for no extra cost, it will also give her unlimited internet access from her handset.

The Skype service is really good if you know plenty of people with Skype on their computer or other 3 customers with it on their phone. Me and my girlfriend are both on 3 and both have Skype so calls between us cost no more than the £5/month for X-Series silver. This is a big bonus because we primarily signed up for the internet access.

It is free and that is a great deal but in practice it's a pain to use. MSN/WLM and Yahoo messenger (which is also free on 3) really needs a qwerty keyboard to keep up to speed and make conversations work well. The LG Viewty has such a facility but it does not allow that configuration when the MSN application is used.

Until phones appear with a qwerty keyboard this facility will be nothing more than a bit of marketing hype.

Personally, I would agree with you, but having seen the speed at which my daughter and her friends can text, i 'm sure they will manage!
