Backing up iPod
Hypnos
31-01-2008
Is there any way I can back up my entire ipod to an external hard drive? I'd like to do this so I dont have to re-rip all my cd's if there is a problem with it or I want to upgrade.

I know I could just keep all the files in the iPod folder and copy them all to the external drive, but this isnt practical for me and I have limited disk space.

Why do you need to back it up? Didn't you keep a copy when you ripped the CD's in the first place?

There are 3rd-party tools to extract audio files from iPods. Not tried them myself, but a quick google should find something.

Yamipod will do the trick.

Personally I do back mine up, so do most. If your iPod has to be restored for any reason or needs to go back for repair. You'll lose everything.
So back it up.

Sorry for being a complete eejit, but are you saying you dont have a copy of your library on hard disk? Why not?

I can't image why anyone would spend time ripping CD's only to delete the iTunes library after loading the iPOD. That's just seems crazy, unless I'm really missing something here. For me, the iPod is just a mobile copy. No need to back it up.

My library is, of course, backed up. I've had 2 external hard disks fail, so backups have been essential.

I always delete the music off i-tunes as soon as Ive copied it to the ipod, so would also be glad if theres something that could back it up, incase of problem with ipod.

Yes you are being an eejit . I don't remove my stuff from my library. Otherwise you'd have to manually add stuff to your iPod. I have all mine backed up on an external drive, plus burnt to DVD. Just to be on the safe side. i've read FAR too many horror stories on this and other iPod forums where idiots haven't backed up and the iPod has died, or their HD has gone down. Therefore DVD's are useful backups.

If you had read my post u would have seen "I know I could just keep all the files in the iPod folder and copy them all to the external drive, but this isnt practical for me and I have limited disk space."

I have most stuff on a seperate drive as 192kbps mp3's which i converted to 128kbps aac for the ipod.

I want to be able to back up the entire ipod (files/settings etc) to an external drive so if there are any probs with ipod, say i need to format, i can easily just put everything back from the external disk without messing about in itunes.

How do you add new stuff? Isn't it a pain in the arse to keep having to faff around? If your computer doesn't have enough space just get a cheap external hard drive and keep your library on that, then your iPod is backed up and it's easy to add and sync stuff.

I'm not 100% sure but doesn't the latest version of iTunes allows you to transfer files from the iPod back to the PC? (ofc if the song is a protected file from the iTunes shop you'll need to authorise the PC to play the files again once back on the PC). I have iTunes where I've purchased some music before but don't currently own an iPod to test this out.

I found the article I read. Appologies I was only half right before. You can only transfer purchased iTunes files from iPod back to PC and not self-imported music from CD's and other sources.

Quote:
“As of iTunes 7 purchased music can be copied from the iPod onto the computer. The computer must be authorized by that iTunes account. iTunes currently allows up to 5 computers to be authorized on one account. It does not allow you to transfer imported music files between computers.”
