Right, having now seen so many demos of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD in shops, and drooling every time. In March the Samsung BD-PU5000 is released for £580 you get playback of both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. My question is what do you all think about the prospect of getting this player? It seems to solve the problem and give the best of both worlds. I can get all the movies I want (some only available on HD-DVD and visa versa) and even when HD-DVD becomes obsolete I'm covered. I can just carry on. The titles I have on HD-DVD will still work.

It's just an idea. I still think hanging on another year and then just getting a Blu-Ray player will be the better option, assuming that eventually all of the Universal titles will get a blu-ray release in the long term

But anyone else thinking about getting one of these? I'm 'Thinking' about it.

Just buy a PS3 now. All the titles will be on BluRay as soon as the contract periods are up with HD-DVD. Cheaper and much, much more fun!

Not interested in gaming. Would be a wasted purchase

It's still an extremely good BR and DVD player, which gets regular software updates, and can stream music, video and photos from your home computer to the home cinema system. It's a brilliant device.

If you have a PC you can get a combi bluray rewriter - hd dvd drive for as little as £180.

Wait for the price of the home ones to drop. HD DVD will be like a dying parasitic twin attached to your shiny blu ray recorder otherwise.

Sorry, but I'm not buying a PS3. I want a high-def optical disk playing unit for watching movies on. Not interested in any of the gaming or streaming stuff.

I've been thinking about taking the plunge for a while, but having read a lot of articles and seen a number of players on both formats in action I have decided that I am going to buy a seperate player for each format. For the price of the all in one, you can buy one of each. I cant imagine that a player designed to play two totally different formats is going to be much good at it. It's a space saving idea if thats what you need, but if you want quality then just like any other part of a AV system, seperates always win hands down.

This is the cheapest blu-ray I could find anywhere.

http://www.play.com/Electronics/Elec...r/Product.html

One of the remarks underneath says you can keep updating it via the net, so. The cheaper option is the following

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/351712...l/Product.html

But that means using my DV1 to HDMI connection to view them on my TV but they won't display in High Def then right? So next to useless

I was like you and not interested in the PS3 but having installed an HD DVD player a few days before Warner killed it I sent it back and got a Sony Bluray player.

I am assuming it was faulty because the dvd playback was troublesome - however - at only £20 less than the PS3 I felt it was a bit expensive.

From standby you press "open" and it takes a full minute for the tray to open.

Startup time for discs was woefully slow and the upscaling capabilities were not that good.

So I sent that back and went for the PS3 using the logic that it was next in the price chain and why should I pay more money for a machine that only plays discs when the PS3 could do much more.

There are no standalone BD players that can connect to the net to update the firmware so that all features can be used.

The only player currently to do that is the PS3 with its wireless internet connection.

I'm not into games one bit but I immediately set out saving some space by transferring all my cd's to the PS3 HDD.

Thousands of songs ,hundreds of discs and god knows how many hours.
Whats more ,upon inserting the disc the PS3 connects to the net to gather the album and track ID so you dont have to enter any text and the disc copies to the HDD in about 2 minutes.

It also has a web browser so you can connect to the internet and it displays pages correctly just like a PC.

Admittedly its fiddly for text (keyboard available though) but its fine for quickly accessing Ebay to check on your items without having to mess about switching the PC on.

The only drawback I found was the remote control.

I didnt want to use the PS3 controller for movie viewing and the additional remote works via Bluetooth.

So I ordered a special little device for £10.
A little key is inserted in one of the USB sockets and you can the use an infra red remote for most things except gaming and powering off and on.

The cheap remote was dodgy but I was able to copy the IR commands into my universal remote and the PS3 is now properly integrated into my multi device system.

It doesnt look too bad and is nowhere near as ugly as the PS2.

Until BD standalone player prices come down significantly buying anything other than the PS3 for BD playback is a waste of money-I'm glad my other player was faulty

Well according to the blurb on the Samsung (and the comments) that one can (not sure about "all features though").

The Samsung does update via the ethernet connection, the playstation is not the only player that can do it, all the Panasonic models do as well.

I have seen the samsung in action and it is fantastic, I would buy this over a PS3 in an instant, I would never use the gaming via a PS3 I am happy with my Wii :0)

£229 is a brilliant price for a Blu Ray player, and you can get a HD DVD for £118 here http://www.digitechelectronics.com/model.php?ID=2978 so then you can have both formats.

I bought my BD P1400 last Week from Richersounds on the VIP Deal for £199.95 & to be honest if I had paid considerably more I would still be delighted with it, It's a cracking machine & very well built.

Even if you never use any of the other functions, the PS3 is still one of the best Blu-ray players available - and certainly nothing comes close to it without paying a lot more (at least not in the UK at least). It is the fastest Blu-ray player currently available (many of the standalones have considerable delays when starting up and accessing discs), and it is also the only current model that will be updateable to Profile 2.0.

Really the only "decent" reason to discount it is if you have an older surround amp that you would want to connect your Blu-ray player to via analogue outs - as the PS3 doesn't have them (just optical out or HDMI).

Don't discount the PS3 simply "because you're not interested in games"; it is quite legitimately a high definition entertainment device rather than "just a console" and gaming is just one aspect of it.

I may go back on what I said. I'm thinking now about going for a PS3 after all. It will still be another few months or so but have some questions.I mainly want to use it as a blu-ray player (might get a couple of games)

but you can connect it to the net (via broadband) and update the blu-ray definations right?

You can run the console from a HDMI lead and not bother with a scart right?

It will upscale standard def DVD's (so long as they are region 2) ??

If I've got a blu-ray disc playing on this PS3 on a Sony Bravia 32" LCD TV via HDMI i'll get a good High Def picture yes? Same goes if a Standard DVD it will upscale it really good?

Wild child question but of my 'MUST-BUY-IT again Blu-Ray list of titles. I notice though not released in europe. It seems as if the US imported versions of Terminator 1 & 2 are region free and will work on a PS3. Would anyone possibly be able to confirm this.

The Matrix Trilogy would be instant rebuys and given the Warner move. It's only a matter of when and not 'if' about a blu-ray release there.

Very wise!

Yes - it has both a gigabit ethernet port and built in wireless (802.11g).

You can run the console from a HDMI lead and not bother with a scart right?
Correct - in fact that is very much the preferred method!

Correct.

Yes - well as good as any high definition source will look on your TV; the picture quality from the PS3 is excellent, both with native HD (Blu-ray) and upscaled (DVD) - certainly compared with anything remotely in the same price range anyway.

While I don't have the titles myself, they are indeed listed as region free on both the liesinc website, and movietyme - those are both pretty definitive sources.

Thank you very much sir for the answers and the link to that site.

Well I reckon I'll go for it then. In about 3 months or so once I've paid off the TV itself. i'll do it. I just figured for £220 you get a cheap blu-ray player but for an extra £60 you can get one that is guaranteed to be upgradeable and could buy and play the odd game or so.

Not that anyone cares but the first batch of blu-ray titles I'll buy now I've got all the facts are

Region B

Harry Potter 1-5
The Simpsons Movie
Monty Python's Life Of Brian
Independence Day

Region A

Terminator 1,2&3
The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy (2005)

Games

The Simpsons Game
Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix

.. only those 2 interest me.

I'm pretty sure that Harry Potter 1-4 are region free, from memory it's only Order of the Pheonix that is region "B", check it out you may well be able to save a good bit!

I'll shop around for price when I finally do it. I have a list and there are some others I will 're-get' when the release comes. Not going to 're-buy' everything though, but I will get 'some' money back buy selling the old DVD's on ebay

What I will do though is put a instant 'stop' to buying any 'new release movies' on DVD as of now, because if i'm getting blu-ray I may as just hang on and buy it straight on blu-ray. If you know what I mean. Eg. If The Golden Compass and Jumper get released before I've got the PS3 for instance. It's pointless getting them on DVD if I'm going to re-buy them then resell the dvd's a few months later on ebay anyway. (If you follow me). My aim is that in a little over a year from now and i'll buy Harry Potter & The Half Blood straight onto Blu-ray and not have to bother with the DVD.

I'll not stop buying DVD sets of TV shows though. Still got several years of doing that I think.

Considering it was widely reported that net connection would not be available until Profile 2.0 was out one has to wonder what Sony are up to if the Panasonic machines can do it.

If they can connect to the net can they still upgrade?

It was reported that all current players cannot be upgraded, even if you have a cd with the new firmware on it
