Making your own pizza

Any ideas on how to make one and ideas on some ingredients?

I quite like pizza but don't mind making my own one for a change.

That sounds interesting, how long do I need to cook it for and what temp? (I've only got a electric oven)

I tried a recipe when I used puff pastry for the base.

Roll it out into a square, cut a "picture frame" (to create an edge) inside it and use a fork the inside square to make indentations (to stop it rising)..throw whatever you want on top and cook in an oven to the reccomendations on the puff pastry

Puff pastry.. surely it will turn into a massive mess, or does the weight of the toppings keep it from expanding too much? You can buy pizza based on supermarkets but they're normally quite hard I find. You can also buy pre sliced pepperoni etc.

The fork marks on the base stop it rising, apart from the edges which crust pretty nicely.

I think I saw it on an Anthony Worel Thompson programme last year and though exactly the same.....but I tried it and it worked

That is very similar to a Nigel Slater recipe where you cook some mushrooms or onions in butter until tender, then chuck them on a puff pastry base and push some thin slices of cheese (eg taleggio or emmental) in between them so when cooked it resembles a pizza but without any tomato.

I make Pizza all the time and it's incredibly easy.

The tomato sauce I use is very simple. All I do is finely chop a medium sized onion, gently fry it then add a tin of tomatoes gently reduce it a bit and season to taste with Black Pepper, Salt, Sugar, Oregano & Basil, then blitz it. I make a lot then freeze it.
It's not authentic but I gotta admit that I don't think I'd enjoy the simplicity of the authentic Italian pizza.

The pizza base is whatever you want it to be but I tend to make the one that came in my bread maker’s recipe book.

As for toppings I like to use that Dry block of grate-able Mozzarella cheese and Strong Mature Cheddar then I go nuts and add Spicy Sausage, Pepperoni, Peppers, Sweet corn, Bacon and if no one's about Pineapple.

Cook it as high as your oven will go. I'd preheat it as well to make yourself it's as hot as it will get.

I love seafood on Pizza's so have to make my own as these are not available in the shops, Na-an Bread is a great idea for a base, or if you want thin, crispy and quick then use Pitta Bread.

I mix chopped tinned Tomatoes with a bit of Puree or sun dried and Basil, spread on the base, spread Tuna all over and sprinkle on Prawns, and cover with Mozzarella and a little red Leicester for colour, although not much as red Leicester can go a bit oily.

Oil the baking tray with olive oil, bake in the oven on gas 7 till golden on top, make sure to put the topping right to the edges or it will burn the top bits that are uncovered.

How weird, I have literally just done this and my cooker is just pre-heating now. I might put on a bit more topping though after what you just said about burning RootsFran

Well, it was pretty experimental, but after 13 minutes my pizzas were done and were...

[drumroll]

SUPERB! I might put a bit more cheese on for next time, but I had tons of lush puree and the 'dough' was fine, so I will certainly be doing this again, although next time I'm gonna be a bit more adventurous and have some toppings on too.

I just get one of the pizza base mixes from ASDA - its just the dry ingrediants mixed together

You add water and kneed the roll it out -easy

I then just usually add tomato puree (out of the tube) mozorella and ham

lovely

Thanks.

And thanks everyone, I made one today and it was so lovely. I added peppers, grated cheese, onions and even some cooked bacon in small pieces and it was so lovely, I think I will make another tomorrow!

My fave pizza topping is tomato sauce on the dough base (tin tomatoes, garlic, fresh basil and tbsp red wine vinegar all nicely thickened in a pot) covered with Italian proscuitto crudo with mushrooms and a little mozzarella then add rocket just before you take it out of the oven...delish! I use Jamie oliver's best pizza dough recipe and it works a treat.

For the tomato base, I use Lloyd Grossman pasta sauces (either the smoky bacon or the sweet basil). It's super easy and delicious.

For other toppings, I use ham or bacon, pepperoni, onions, garlic, red peppers, mushrooms, mozzarella cheese, and cheddar cheese. Sometimes, I use jalepenos to spice it up.

After cooking, I top it with freshly grated Parmesan.

I get the bases from tesco pre made, then make my own corriander pesto to go on instead of a tomato base (which has fresh corriander, olive oil, pepper in). Then add toppings to your hearts content on top of there. Mmmmm

If you use just a tomato base, parma ham and rocket work really well as toppings.
