Either will do. Though you don't actually plug it into the TV for the surround sound from the PS3.
Obviously you DO plug it into the TV, but you also plug an Optical Digital Audio lead from the Home Cinema system to the PS3. The TV in this instance only displays the pictures. Only the digital audio output on the PS3 is guaranteed to carry 5.1 audio. The connection from PS3 to TV is likely to be stereo only as that is all most TVs can deal with. |

Thanks for that - he has said:
"do they both have sockets for an optical lead? I don't know what stands for optical when im looks at the specs. Also would the optical lead connect from the ps3 to the dvd player or the sub?"

Neither of those 2 home cinema systems have an optical output. I have a PS3 & recently purchased a sony home cinema system with optical & the difference is amazing, if you want to get the best from the PS3 then don't settle for anything less than optical. You will need to buy a better system than these 2, pref a high end sony or panasonic cinema system to get an optical output or failing that you will need an AV unit & seperate speakers.
My system is the sony DAV830w now selling between £300 & £500. |

Actually the second of those Samsung models (the 35R) does have an optical input jack so that should do fine.
However if you *really* want the best sound from the PS3 then you'll need to invest in a proper AV amp with PCM-HDMI input, which will allow you to hear the high definition soundtracks from Blu-ray movies (Dolby TrueHD, Uncompressed PCM, and dts HD HRA)* - the PS3 decodes them onboard and then sends them all as PCM to an amp which can then pump them to speakers. Optical can only carry ordinary Dolby Digital and dts - which is basically the same as what you get on DVD (though the dts will be higher quality as it carries about twice the bitrate on Blu-ray than it does on DVD). The cheapest HDMI amp that I know of (that can actually grab audio from the HDMI rather than just relaying it through) is the Sony STR-DG910, though you would need to get speakers separately - like these for example. *Some Blu-rays have dts Master Audio too - but unfortunately the PS3 can't decode that currently and so it just defaults to ordinary dts. It is hoped however that a future firmware update may allow it to decode Master Audio too. |

Slightly different q, but I do have my PS3 hooked up by optical lead to my panasonic surround system. The display shows 5.1 DTS as the source but I'm getting no sound, is there s setting that needs tweaking on the PS3 ?
Thanks. |

the PS3 needs to be told to output sound from the optical in various flavours. It's a setting on in the long list of settings available.

In the PS3 'settings' menu, you need to change the 'audio out' to 'optical', it defaults to HDMI.

The Sony STR-DG910 is only HDMI 1.2a I believe - however it will still cope with everything the PS3 can output.
If it is receiver-side decoding of Dolby TrueHD and dts Master Audio that you are interested in then the Onkyo 605 is currently the cheapest av amp that can do that. |
