iPhone - is it worth getting now?
comedyfish

Obviously it is a sexy yet relatively rubbish phone and yet i still want it - I'm in o2 anyway so that's all good

my point is I'm still tempted like I was from day one but do you think it will come down in price or even a new version come out soon?

basically is it work getting one now!

at the mo i have an Xda orbit (starting to get a bit fed up with it now tho) and I my bill is normally around 18 quid a month so my bill will increas e- i don't really care too ,much as I guess I can get all my (work) emails etc so that will be good but i don't want to get the phoine only to find it goes down in price soon or another one comes out with better camera etc

any thoughts - especially from people who have one, not just - nah it's shit replies

I would wait until the second revision comes out, which shouldnt be a million miles away.

I still think the N95 8GB would be a better bet at the moment.

The I-phone will improve, but not immediately.

i don't know! it's always difficult buying technology because there's always something better on the horizon. there is a new version coming with 3g but we don't know when it's coming out.

iphone has been on sale in america since 29 June 2007. it seems to me that some sort of revision is likely by mid year.

apple have also said that iphone will be coming to asia in 2008. most people think this will mean a 3G version.

so it seems by the end of the year there will be a new iphone. i bought one in december. my thinking was it was likely to another year until there was a 3G phone with acceptable battery life (so as to be able to use the thing for hours as an ipod, phone and internet browser) so i might as well get one now.

if they can obtain decent battery consumption from 3G, it's going to be good. EDGE is actually very good for web browsing (better than most people think) but, from my point of view, there isn't any EDGE where i live. also while you are browsing over EDGE, you cannot receive calls whereas you can with 3G.

so, it depends on your reaction to the situation. it is more likely than not that this time next year there will be a much better iphone.

I think rubbish is taking it a bit too far.

As a phone, it is limited- No 3G etc.

As a mobile multimedia device it is very good, but still in it's infancy, and improvements could be made to it- better camera, longer battery life etc.

I wouldnt buy one for those reasons, but I am not ruling out getting one in the future if it does improve.

The 3G issue I don't buy unless you are specifically talking about HSDPA. EDGE on the iPhone is faster than 3G on my N73.

If you specifically want a better camera on a phone that does video too then the iPhone isn't for you. But for pretty much anything else I find it to be superior to all other models. As a primer, I have come from a Windows Mobile and Symbian background.

Web browsing, Music, podcasts, video, photos, , podcasts, email etc. If all of these fit into what you want in a phone then there is nothing that comes close to delivering the package like the iPhone does. I expect many more reasons to be added to this list once the SDK launches.

well, i don't want to mislead you into thinking there won't be an update for a year. there might be an update in the next four months. no-one really knows. my opinion, for what it's worth, is that we won't see 3G until the end of the year at the earliest but there could well be a 16GB version mid year.

iphone works out great for me. but then i'm mainly interested in web browsing, listening to music and making a few calls. and for that i need battery life. i'm prepared to forego the 3G in return for the longer battery life. and i'm not at all interested in making videos or taking photos with a phone. but other people have different priorities which are not well served by iphone.

If you're an average human being on a normal wage, the Iphone is not worth the money. If however, you have a tree at the back of your garden which grows money or you're related to the Royal Family in some way, you may want to consider it.

Don't Apple use UPS as their inbound courier for repairs/service?

The new tarriffs are an improvment on what was originally offered and I can get it for £200

Do I want one? oh yes

Am I going to buy one? - No, I will get a Wii instead, and my £35 a month will buy a game

Yeah, but the Wii is even more rubbish as a phone

You can on the iPhone. Not sure how. Maybe it uses two lines. That would explain a few of the other calling features, too.

Just tested it, and income calls are diverted to answerphone whilst using EDGE on my iPhone.

I don't know why everyone thinks it is expensive?

8GB iPod touch £199 + Smartphone £70 + contract £35pcm
OR
8GB iPhone £269 + contact £35pcm

The same!

At the moment, I would say there are better phones with similar features for less money.
Wait and see if the phone will improve; they surely can't make it any more expensive.

I think it would cost around £800 over 18 months.

What smartphone can you get for £70?
SilentLoner

You can just buy the new iPhone whenever its released without a new contract.

I think the £70 smartphone would be a discount due to buying it on contract.

It isn't as expensive as people like to make out, the contracts have been improved....and the first thing people I know say about it being bad is 3G.

3G is not mainstream yet. It just seems to be an easy nit picking point.

I would find the ability to record video as being a bigger problem than 3G
