I have old phones lying around the house and I want to recycle them.

Using TISCALI incedently, the site here.

Anyway, I assume the phones IMEI number is linked to me, and I since i don't know who/what will happen with the phone when I send it away. Can I somehow deregister the phone in some way.

Also if anyone knows, does recycle mean refurbish and reuse or destroy in an eco friendly way?

When you send a phone for recycling several things can happen depending on the results of various tests.
Certain models will be wiped and given new covers. These will sent to developing counties where they will be sold cheaply or given away.
Others will be stripped for their parts.
Some platstic parts are recycled for use in roofing, flooring and paving materials.
If it is a recent handset in very good condition, it will be wiped and sold as a refurbished handset.
You don't need to worry about the IMEI. The operator has the IMSI of your SIM linked to you.
If you have registered the phone on the Immobilise or MendUK databases then follow the procedure for replacing the phone.

It would be better to give your old phones to charity. Charity shops are always asking for them.

Opticians look out for old spectacles.
