I connected my laptop to my TV via 'headphones out' to double jack plugs at back of TV, but no sound getting through when I play a CD.
Is there some TV remote button I need to press to connect the two?
TV is a 15yr old Sony with speakers hooked-on each side.

Assuming you mean double 'phono' plugs at the back?, they are usually an OUTPUT not an input.

You could use the phono skts on the front of your TV (Red & White) or input the audio from your lappy into a scart skt on the rear of your set.

The phonos I have on both my TV are ins. You just need to find the channel that supports that input, usually by pressing the AV or input button.

You get 'ins' in conjunction with a composite phono, or S-Video mini-din input - usually on the front or side of a TV.

However, he specified a 15 year old Sony and sockets on the back - which would almost certainly be line outputs to feed an external sound system.

Easy way to tell - look how they are labelled!.

Red one is labelled R/D/D, White one is L/G/S.

Which I notice is the same as the TV side speakers sockets too.

Nothing is labelled AV on TV or its remote control.

The AV button on a Sony TV is marked with a picture of a TV screen with an arrow pointing in to it (International symbol for AV).

What model is your set?, I can look in the manual tomorrow.

Remote control has two TV symbols with arrows numbered 1 and 2. Pressing either doesn't help.

Its a KV-DX21TU
I have the 4 page instuction leaflet but cannot find it

Possible solution to my problem. Just pulled cables out of TV and one came apart from its plug solder! If it was faulty that could be the problem.
They were gold plated top of the range (almost) from Maplin couple of years ago.
Gonna have to get it soldered again.
Audio would not work with one of the plugs faulty presumably?

Just checked, the sockets on the back are outputs, if you look again you will see a symbol with an arrow pointing outwards.

However, does that model have input sockets under the front flap?, selected with the AV button on the remote.

You should also be aware that you may not get sound unless there's a locked picture on screen, TV's often mute if the picture isn't locked.

Thanks Nigel

Ah yes I see the symbol, didn't notice it before

No input sockets under front flap, just headphones socket and 12 buttons for tuning/searching & other stuff I don't recognise without that Instructions leaflet.

Whats a locked picture?

There needs to be a video signal going to the video input on the TV before the TV will play audio.

If your laptop has a video output then that will do, or you could use the video output from a DVD player. Connect the yellow socket of the DVD player to the yellow socket on the TV. Swwitch DVD player on. Picture from DVD player, sound from the PC.

Regards

Chris

Why is none of this tech stuff simple? You would think to play laptop audio through TV speakers would be a simple cable connection, mabye my TV is too old?
No DVD player here.
I'll dig out the laptop speakers

Thanks to all for help though.
