Hiya,
I lost my handbag last night and my phone was in it. Its on an 18 mnth 02 conract and think it expires in about four months. I rang up and cancelled my phone but because i dont have insurance i have to buy a new handset. So do i like go and buy a pay and go phone and ask them to send me a new simcard and put that into it? And will the sim card be on my same contract?? Im so confused by it all! What do i do!!

You need to ask O2 to send you a new SIM card with the same mobile number on the same account.

Because you don't have insurance, you'll need to buy an O2 Pay & Go phone. Then, put the new SIM they send you into the PAYG phone. You'll still be entitled to an upgrade in 4 months time, but it will be based on the phone you lost, so perhaps it would be best to invest in a cheap phone and then let O2 offer you an expensive one for free when the time comes to upgrade. You don't want to go and buy a Pay & Go phone now for £200 and then have O2 offer you a £150 one at your upgrade time.

Check your home insurance. Your phone might be covered on that.

Unless it's actually added as an extra it is not normally covered on your contents insurance. I just added my N95 to my contents insurance and the premium is £28 per year. Not bad compared to other insurance I checked out. Same amount of cover, but £50 excess as on rest of the policy.

Sorry to hear that.

I lost my contract phone a few years ago without insurance. I rang T-Mob (one2one in thoes days) and they offered me cut price handsets. They said these handsets were reconditioned phones that people had trialed for a week and then sent them back. I think I only paid £10 for a decent Nokia handset.

Not always, my policy automatically includes items carried with you up to £1000 (in case of mugging and all that) for MP3s players, camera etc. I asked did it include mobile phones, and it does.

Well that's your policy, as standard home insurance does not cover mobiles unless you ask and normally you pay extra for the coverage!

All I'm saying is that it's worth asking. Mine is a standard contents insurance policy, and I'm covered without having asked for it. That's all.
