How do I get this phone working again?

I was going to give my old Nokia 3310 to my grandad. It's on o2 pay as you go. It hasn't been in use for 4 years and I've just switched it on and tried to send a text and make a call from it and it says 'No network coverage'. What do I have to do to get it working? I can't phone it, as I don't know the number anymore. How do you find out the number on the phone?

Before I give the phone away, I want to see if anyone has sent me any texts on it since I last used it. Will the texts be stored on the phone or the sim card? With my current phone, they are stored on the phone untill the memory is full, then they go onto the sim card.

You won't be able to check anything. The SIM card has been cut off by O2 because in the terms of use, you need to make a chargeable action within a six month period to keep the line active. O2 will not reactivate this number for you and you cannot receive / make calls or texts.

You will need to buy (or get a free) new O2 SIM card. They are currently giving away up to four SIM cards here. They can take a few weeks to arrive. If you can't wait that long, your local O2 shop have them for £4.99.

The simcard is dead, It hasnt been used for 4 years, So the service ended,

You will need a new simcard, No more texts or anything will come through.

Have a look round, There are plenty of sites where you can get free ones from.

Or even unlock it free (i think, i have done before) and use a network of your choice

Thanks guys. It's not a problem that I have to get a new sim for it, I just wanted to check if I had any texts from someone who I think has my old number. Would they have been able to send texts to that number even if the sim card was cut off?

The texts will have sent from their phone, saying "message sent" and then the text will have arrived at the exchange and the phone number will not have been recognised. The network would continue to try and deliver the message for, I think, it's about 7 days. After this time it gets cancelled, but the sender will be none the wiser.

Thanks. Unless they had their phone set to receive acknowledgments?

Yeah, true. Although they don't work on O2 (unless you put a code before sending the text - something that hardly anyone will do).
