I bought new potatoes from sainsburies and boiled them for like 10 mins today. Imagine my horror when I went to drain them and the cell membranes in them had collapsed to the extent that they were leaking through the collander! It ruined my tea of grilled trout, potatoes and veg. Why did my potatoes turn out like that?

That seems strange for only 10 minutes of boiling - I usually give my potatoes longer than that and haven't had that problem.

Are you sure you weren't temporarily abducted by aliens and actually left them boiling for 2 hours????

So did I. I was all ready for a post about getting them removed with lazers. I have never heard potatoes called "tats" before.

Tell me about it! I was so annoyed. The trout was lush but I had to have it with waffles

Would that have helped? The skins had self stripped and it wasnt even as firm as mash!

It all sounds very odd. 10 minutes is certainly not too long. Maybe it was the type of potato - they are more fragile (I am totally clutching at straws here).

l i didnt see how bad it was, but it might have helped, yes, roasting tends to firm potato up - i put a soggy baked potato in the oven after it had been in the slow cooker and that firmed it up.So i don't see why it wouldnt work in the situation you describe.

Why were you trying to bake a potato in a slow cooker?

There are some very odd culinary practises amongst posters here

because i read it could be done, and i wondered if i could have one ready when i come in from work like that rather than waiting hours for one by putting it in the conventional oven when i came in - but as i said it came out a bit soggy and needed a few minutes in the real oven to crisp it up.
But it tasted divine.

That is odd. I was going to ask if perhaps you cut them too small but if you can cook fish and other veg I assume you're a good enough cook to boil potatoes.

Well that's your problem! It cooks in 70-80% of the time of your average potato That'll teach you to get posh spuds

I think you might be onto a good business idea there. Instead of Spud-U-Like, could be Stud-U-Like, the potatos to give you that lift
