New Covent Garden Soup
The Unknown One

Can someone explain to me why these are so expensive?

Don't get me wrong, it's easily the nicest soup I've tasted, and I don't mind paying a little extra for something better. But typically £2 a carton for what is essentially only one meal is a bit much surely?

I can't justify spending £2 a carton on them. If they're on offer I'll get them - perhaps a BOGOF - otherwise I just don't bother.

Anyone else like them, but think they're a bit expensive?

They are expensive, but I like them.

My local co op sells them, but they are always reducing them down when the date is nearly up as I don't think many people buy them. I really only buy them when they are reduced - last time I got a carton for 20p! A bargain and alright if you are going to have it the same day/next day at the most.

I see you've edited - I was quite aghast that someone should pay £20 for a carton of soup

As above, I only buy it when it's marked down; I often add a bit of cream and/or brandy and/or more herbs.

I love the Carrot and Coriander one, they are probably expensive because they are fresh and near to homemade.

Beats me why anyone would pay so much.............still loaded with too much salt. It takes less than 5 minutes to make your own - more nutritious by far.

I think they've gone up in price recently too! I love the chicken soup - but it's hard to justify the price.

BTW, Heinz now have a gourmet type copy of Covent Garden - it's about 40p cheaper, and tastes awful.

I get mine on deal and freeze them. I love them.

Yeh, near to homemade in a factory outside Leeds!

LCDMAN............No idea how they justify the price - a success for brand over substance.

Chiller cabinet soups are very hit-and-miss. As a general rule they have far too much onion, usually undercooked, so the taste is quite raw. The worst offenders I've had have been from Sainsbury's. Covent Garden have some good varieties but also some horrible ones. Strangely the cheapest brand, Morrisons, is also the the most reliable: all their own-brand soups taste OK.

(I've only tried veggie varieties).

I can not believe that you would have a whole carton for a meal!!!

They are pretty fattening and they still have preservatives to give 'em a month long shelf life - make your own me thinks.

I find M&S soups to be far superior.

I'm not much of a soup fan, but for me, the best soup in the world is Duchy Original Pea & Ham Soup.

It's a while since I've bought any so can't remember the price but it's probably more expensive that Covent Garden. It's certainly worth it for a weekend treat though.

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean you can't believe someone would just have a carton of soup for a meal, or do you mean you can't believe someone would eat a carton in one sitting?

The consensus on here seems to be that they are very nice, but only worth buying if they're on offer/marked down. Makes you wonder what kind of market there would be for them if they sold for say £1 instead of £2.

Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsburys & Asda are doing them for £1.99 but I saw today in Sainsburys theyre 2 for £3.00
