20gb ipod "for spares or repair" - would you buy one ?

the reason i ask is that there's a guy on ebay who's got 3 of the old white models for sale - i think it's the 3rd generation model.

he's selling just the unit on it's own with no leads at all, and he's selling them "for spares or repair" for twenty six quid plus a fiver for postage.

he's only apparently got THREE available, but when i asked him what the actual problem with the units are he replied with "i've got too many to test so i don't know".

he's got some decent feedback - 99.4% - so i'm reasonably satisfied it isn't a scam, but does anyone think they're worth a punt ?

i know most ipod problems are ultimately fixable, but i don't want to shell out £31 if it's something that's beyond repair.

so the question is - if you saw this ebay ad, and were told that the unit is untested, but probably knackered, would you take a chance for £31 quid ?

How long is piece of string?

Given that he won't be specific as to whats wrong with them, I probably wouldn't bother. The cynic in me say if he won't be specific, they're probably knackered beyond economic repair. Otherwise, don't you think he'd have fixed them up and sold them on himself?

Whats his previous trading like? If he's bought and sold a lot of stuff like this, I'd be even more certain they're completely kaput.

Having said that, I bought a mobile phone 'for spares and repair' off ebay. Total mistake on my part .... was browsing closing auctions and surfing other stuff at the same time, didn't notice the small print. He stated it simply wouldn't power up but he didn't have a charger so had no idea what was wrong with it. I fully expected to have bought a dud (he bought and sold a lot of phones) but when I got it, stuck it on a charger and it was fine. I got lucky.

Having said all that, if I'd read the small print on the auction, I wouldn't have bought it.

reading his feedback, he seems to almost specialise in apple stuff.

he sells applecare protection plans and has also sold a lot of ipods of various memory sizes as 'spares or repair.

he's also sold some working ipods and a few copies of final cut as well.

this feedback made me smile ..

Quote:
“good transaction tho paid £7 for postage that cost £2.22.... expensive envelope!”

the single neutral feedback he's had in 12 months is this.

Quote:
“What to say.....? forgot to mention cliking noise....”

but then he's responded with

Quote:
“READ THE LISTING FOR SPARES OR REPAIRS”

hhmmmmmm .. i don't know ....

I might pay a few quid, its really not worth much even if you get it fully working, considering there have been 3 more generations of 'full' iPod, theres been 2 generations of mini, three generations of nano, one touch and one iphone. People would rather get something a bit newer for not much more.

thing is, i'm not interested in the touch or any of the newer models.

well, i'd maybe like to get an 80gb classic if i could afford it, but to be honest, the 2nd generation 20gb model is perfectly adequate for what I want it for.

i've got about 16gb of music as it is, so it would also double as a useful storage facility if i ever wanted to go back to Linux (which i probably will at some point).

anyway, i've emailed one guy who bought two of these ipods and asked him how he got on - depending on what he says, i might take a punt.

well .. i've bought one.

to be fair, the seller replied to me and said that he'd be willing to test a few of the units and let me know what the problems are so i could pick which one i wanted.

looks like i might have a result .. the bloke has just contacted me and said he's tested one unit that works properly, but doesn't fully charge so i've asked him to send me that one.

i've replaced batteries on ipods before, so it'll be a doddle

Does anyone know where to get a cheap new 20GB hard disk for the photo Ipod?

Mine is in 'spares' condition since the hard disk decided to stop working (otherwise in perfect condition) - but the cheapest hard disks seem to be around £35-40 with postage.
