So you are happy losing the beginning of programs ? If you don't lose them then please tell the rest of us the magic setting that fixes it.

In reply to your question, I've just checked the beginnings and endings of the 20 unwatched, most recent recordings on my Humax. They have all been recorded with AR and series link and are from the last fortnight. 16 are BBC programmes, 4 are C4/E4/More4.

15 programmes started on time. 4 started within a couple of seconds of the start time, each of these programmes were showing "previously on...... " and didn't lose anything important. 1 programme started 10 mins late, at the end of the first advert (Jame Oliver C4).

19 programmes recorded right to the end. 1 C4 programme finished a couple of seconds early (City of Vice), but we don't seem to have missed anything vital.

There were no ITV programmes in my sample, but the stuff I record from that channel is usually ok.

It may be relevant that most things are recorded during peak time and that the Humax is usually switched on at that time. Our transmitter is Sutton Coldfield, don't know if that makes a difference.

In summary BBC works very well. I don't record ITV so often, but don't have problems with what I do record. C4/E4/ More4 are less reliable, but not unreliable enough to make me use padding.

I appologise for having a box which works fine for the things that I want to record!

I am generally happy with what does record using AR... apart from the odd thing which have been the broadcasters data being wrong (dancing on ice and place in the sun) the things that have recorded (probably in the region of 100+ programs) have been more or less complete and haven't missed anything important.

I never used padding before on the earlier firmware and just missed parts of the program if they were late (though 99% of the time it wasn't an issue)

My issue with the HUMAX is the programs that did not record at all or just vanished from the scheduled recording list for no reason! Thats the "bug" that needs fixing. Must be about 7 or 8 in the last two weeks.

That is appalling, are you sure you haven't got a faulty box

Mine works fine as well, but I think your excessive use of smilies was bound to wind someone up

I would like v22 to fix the three main problems with accurate recording and add one new feature.

1. Make accurate record start quicker (can be 35 secs from the AR signal to the Hummy starting to record)
2. Give a warning message when series links clash (current EPG data is checked but if next weeks episodes move time you can get 3 or more timers at the same time)
3. Allow overlapping recording with consecutive progs on different channels. Currently recording stops when second prog starts or at scheduled time, whichever is earlier. This is going to be a problem for Dr Who/Confidential.
4. Save the EPG to disc

good point, never thought of that one

thanks

We don't use the PVR for watching normal TV, so my most desired request would be an option to alter the SCART signal that indicates that the PVR is transmitting to only signal it when the PVR is playing back a recording, a menu of some sort is being displayed or the box is displaying a warning message (i.e. more like a VCR operates). It is very annoying to have to manually switch back to the TV every time we switch the TV on, as the PVR always tells it to switch to the SCART input.

My other request would be that if a sheduled recording is made within the padding period (e.g. 2 minutes before a program is due to start, with autopadding set to 3 minutes) to actually record the program. Currently the program gets ignored as the autopadded start time has passed.

Hope not its now just over 2 years old. Not had any problems with disappearing schedules etc till the OTA upgrade.

I am wondering why some people have problems and others don't - could it simply be different transmitters, corrupt signals, different programs etc? I guess the number of variables is unlimited. I guess what should have been included in the initial design was some sort of log files so errors could be pinpointed.

My top ones are -
1) Don't corrupt the HD - ever.
2) Don't completely ignore a request to record a programme simply because the first few mins/secs clash with something else. Start when you can.
3) Don't lock up - ever.

Everything else is just detail!

A agree with Sue_C. Most things are recorded perfectly. One or two you lose some dribble off the front - typically open credits or 'wot happened last time if you have the memory retention of a goldfish'. It's certainly nothing to get worked up about.

When I first got it it felt odd compared to my Sky+ but now I realise that with the Sky+ I'm forever having to fast forward to get to the programme. The Hummy nearly always just starts with what I want to watch. I'm beginning to like it.

I just wish they'd store the EPG on the hard disk. I thought someone said that they guaranteed the whole thing would be there within ten minutes? That's utter tosh. I've had several cases where the guide just gave up on certain channels (C4 and 5 mainly).

Usually true if the Hummy is tuned to BBC1. Other channels can take much longer to accumulate a complete EPG.

You could just as equally say, all I ever want from a car is 4 wheels, an engine and a steering wheel, oh and for it not to kill me. However, there is a worldwide industry based upon the fact that people like features in cars. In my opinion some of this "detail" is not trivial - particularly when you've been accustomed to having it previously as with my Tivo. I can't get my wife to even consider a new car that doesn't have heated seats, however for me that is a trivial detail. Likewise my wife thinks Humax is absolute rubbish because of the things it can't do compared with Tivo - I have to keep defending it believe it or not !!

Hey, I didn't say it wasn't important detail, but compared to actually recording what you're told to record, not losing it at a later date, and managing to play/record/whatever without locking up, it's detail.

Last night I left it tuned to BBC 1 with the PIP tuned to BBC2. I went to make dinner and when I came back twenty minutes later it still hadn't loaded C5 beyond now/next.

Lost all my scheduled recordings this week while I was away travelling. Had to put into standby and back on to get Humax working again. This also happened a few weeks ago, shrugged my shoulders that time, but is obviously a bit more serious than I thought. Good job I had V+ duplicating all recordings. I never lost a single recording in the last few years of using Tivo.

You must also consider the transmitter local to your area. I've seen here and elsewhere people reporting on the same recording giving slightly different results from different transmitter regions.
