Traken, Logopolis and Castravalva

I prefer the classic Dr Who era to that of today.

Not many of the Hartnell/Troughton stories exist so it is difficult judge their adventures- especially Troughton and I have Tomb of the Cybermen on DVD.

I think John Pertwees stories are wonderful especially those involving Roger Delgados Master and the Daleks.

The Frontier in Space / Planet of the Daleks epic is my favourite from that era.

Tom Bakers Doctor for me was the best and he is involved in two of my favourite alltime stories.

The Keeper of Traken was the beginning of the end for Tom and had the perfect assistant in terms of willing to learn in Adric played by Matthew Waterhouse.

It also introduced Anthony Ainley who played Tremas a scientist.

The Master also returned in the form of Peter Pratts Master but this time played by Geoffrey Beavers.

Logopolis is the best one for me and introduces Tegan and also Anthony Ainleys Master.

I thought Castravalva was one of Peter Davisons better stories.

This I think is the best trilogy for the classic era.

I think they all have their charisma and screen presence.

I grew up with Tom Baker. It was not until 5 Faces of Doctor Who that I was able to see William Hartnell,Paddy Troughton and Jon Pertwee.

I always found Paddy to be my favourite. I am not sure why but he always had a sparkle in his eye and a mischievious naughty school boy type behaviour.

Any praise directed towards M Waterhouse / Adric is rare! I have often thought him sorely under-rated as an actor / companion.

MW is no better or worse an actor than Sarah Sutton or Janet Fielding. In the Tardis scenes at the beginning of Logopolis, MW is rather natural and down-to-earth, knocking spots off Tom Baker's OTT strangeness.

Traken/Logopolis/Castrovalva are some of my earliest memories, and it brings back a happy glow to see the DVS recently. Melkur. Kassia. The Watcher. Pharos Project. Those twisty-turny corridors of Castrovalva. The Castrovalva forest hunters. The Master's "column" Tardis.

"The Watcher! So he was the Doctor all along!"

I do enjoy these three stories, but they do smack of 'let's make them so confusing, viewers won't notice how bad they actually are'. Yes the stories are imaginative, and there are lots of ideas, but just too many of them.

Traken was a good story, felt very much like the stories of Barry Letts and Terence Dicks

Logopolis- I enjoy it from a nostalgic point of view, but it is just too confusing. They already had the cool Tardis within a Tardis idea, so why have the confusing Watcher stuff? It made absolutely no sense. Why did they need a 'possible' future version of the Doctor to oversee his impending regeneration? He never need that before. To me this is where classic DW started to fall apart. It tried to be too clever.

Castrovalva - WTF? I still to this day have no idea what that shambles was about. Zero room?

I recently watched the boxset. Mostly I enjoyed it very much, mostly, but there was a bit in Logopolis where the Doctor is stretching out over the radar thing, and there is a genius special effect; where there is a cardboard cut out of the Master in the background doing a 'curse you Doctor' pose which nearly made me wet my pants

In my fanwanky dreams I'd love the 3 specials constructed along the same lines.

3 stories all linked leading to a great sacrifice DT will have to make.

You might be interested to know that a Hartnell story The Time Meddler has just been released on DVD

I love the forest scenes, and the calm of the Castrovalvan people, and the lovely Castrovalvan sets. The Zero Room is nice techobabble and easy enough to understand, i think.

I know, i'm exaggerating the confusing nature of the insipid story I actually find the forest scenes and most of the story unbearable to watch. Far worse than anything RTD has done. Mind you nothing sinks as low as Romana's regeneration in Destiny

Romana's regeneration makes me chuckle, and is one of the few redeeming features of Destiny of the Daleks ...
