BB4 ~ Brandon Showalter "Out Before It Even Begins"
Brandon Showalter, a 28-year-old computer engineer from Newport Beach, Calif., suddenly found himself out of the running for the $500,000 grand prize after he was caught trying to make contact with his girlfriend.
Showalter - who sources close to the show call "a good kid" who made a foolish mistake - was discovered sneaking calls to his girlfriend who is not in the "Big Brother" house. Contestants on the show are required to live in a hotel room for about one week prior to the show's debut, cut off from the outside world. Once inside the "Big Brother" house they continue to have no outside contact - no television, no radio, no phones - for up to three months. Producers deemed Showalter "not ready for the 'Big Brother' experience" if he couldn't get past the first week, the source said. "They're sequestered for several days prior to going into the house and it gives producers another chance to determine if they're prepared," a CBS spokeswoman told The Post yesterday. "He struggled with it and got a little stir crazy." CBS has since replaced Showalter with the ex-flame of one of the other contestants. That means that five additional people - instead of four as originally planned - are former spouses or lovers of other contestants in the house. "What we were looking for were pre-existing relationships so you start at the very beginning with a story that's already there," co-executive producer Allison Grodner recently said. All the contestants entered the house this past weekend and the pre-taped, moving-in episode will air tonight. Like last year, the show will air three times a week. A live edition will air on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. with additional pre-taped episodes on Fridays and Tuesdays. On "Big Brother," a group of people agree to live in a house jam-packed with cameras and microphones where their every move is caught on tape, aired on television or beamed live over the Internet. Each week one person in the group is voted out of the house by the others. The one remaining house-guest takes home a check for $500,000. http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/2603.htm |

'Big Brother' Player Denied Entry to House
'Big Brother' Player Denied Entry to House
(Sunday, July 06 10:00 PM) LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - A contestant on CBS' "Big Brother 4" has been kicked out of the house before he even entered. Brandon Showalter, one of the nine people scheduled to enter the "Big Brother 4" house in Tuesday's (July 8) premiere, has been removed from the game. His replacement will be announced during the premiere. A CBS spokeswoman says the show's producers thought Showalter, a 28-year-old computer engineer from Newport Beach, Calif., had a great personality for "Big Brother" but were concerned about how he would handle up to three months with no contact with the outside world. Houseguests aren't allowed access to phones or any media during their stay. The spokeswoman also confirmed reports that Showalter may have tried to contact someone during the time he was sequestered before entering the house. Showalter's replacement will be an ex-boyfriend or -girlfriend of one of the other players, bringing the number of former couples on the show from four to five. The "X Factor," as producers Arnold Shapiro and Allison Grodner call it, is the biggest new wrinkle in the game this time around. Several "Big Brother" fan sites have noted that Showalter -- or someone claiming to be him -- posted several messages about his removal on a personal web site over the weekend. The site has since been taken down. Article here |

'Big Brother 4' casting change
Tuesday, July 7th, 2003
'Big Brother 4' casting change By JOHN POWELL -- Jam! Showbiz For prospective 'Big Brother 4' contestant Brandon Showalter, the game is over before it even began. CBS confirmed today they have made a major casting change to 'Big Brother 4'. Gone is Brandon Showalter, the 28-year-old computer engineer from Newport Beach, Calif. Showalter will be replaced with a fifth ex in the game. This will increase the four 'X Factor' couples to five. It is not known if CBS removed Showalter from the cast for a violation of the rules or if he left on his own accord. All of the 'Big Brother 4' contestants have been sequestered in the L.A. area and must follow strict guidelines while waiting to enter the 'Big Brother' house. Outside communication is limited and each HouseGuest is assigned a "handler" by CBS whenever they leave their hotel room. The premiere of 'Big Brother 4 : The X Factor' will air tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. ET on CBS. The twist to this year's series is that some of the players will have their ex-boyfriends or ex-girlfriends joining them in the house as participating HouseGuests. CBS is keeping the identities of the exes a secret until the premiere. The new players know nothing about 'The X Factor' theme. Last Monday, CBS revealed the identities of nine of the 13 'Big Brother 4' HouseGuests. Showalter was a part of that list. Showalter's photo and bio have been deleted from the official CBS web site. His personal Internet site - http://www.surfingbarrels.com/ - has also vanished. According to his profile on the CBS site, Showalter's motto was the Golden Rule, he felt he could score points by flirting and using his sexuality to his advantage and has been known to party with people like Dennis Rodman. In the 'Big Brother' show, contestants must remain in a house on the CBS Studio in California for three months without contact with the outside world. The 'Big Brother' house is outfitted with 38 cameras and 62 microphones, which record the lives of the 12 contestants 24 hours a day. The goings-on are broadcast on TV as well as over the Internet. Each week the contestants vote one of their own out until just two are left. The final surviving HouseGuests are then subjected to a final vote. In last year's edition, Lisa Donahue, the 26-year-old former L.A. bartender turned photographer took home the grand prize of $500,000. Danielle Reyes, the 30-year-old media buyer from California came in second place winning $50,000. Will Kirby, a 28-year-old physician from Florida won 'Big Brother 2'. Nicole, the 31-year-old personal chef from Atlanta, was the second place finisher. Eddie McGee, the New Yorker who lost his left leg to cancer, won a half million dollars as the winner of the first U.S. 'Big Brother' after the viewers and not a jury of evicted HouseGuests voted for him during a finale phone poll.
