A positive thread about Leon by a non-Leon fan?

I Get Mobbed In Scotland, Says X Factor winner Leon Jackson

Feb 7 2008 By John Dingwall

X FACTOR winner Leon Jackson is moving to London for the sake of his career.

But the 19-year-old from Whitburn, West Lothian, said he is happy being just another face in the crowd in the big smoke.

That's because the singer gets mobbed wherever he goes at home.

Leon - who topped the Christmas chart with single When You Believe after winning the reality talent show - said London was "where it's happening".

He said: "It's not so bad in London. It's fine down here.

"You can go about your normal day-to-day life but back in Scotland, it's quite bad and hard because everybody knows me.

"I'm only up in Scotland for a couple of days here and there and when I am up, I spend it in the house."

Hotel-based Leon said: "It's an exciting new chapter in my life and I will do whatever it takes to assist the process."

As he settles in down south, Leon is busy working on songs for his album.

Two of them were penned by Swede Jorgen Elofsson - who has written for American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson and previous X Factor winner Leona Lewis.

Leon revealed the album, which he is helping write, will be full of original tracks.

He said Simon Cowell and other music bosses no longer felt X Factor winners had to do cover versions. Leon said: "Leona learned how to do it and came out with an original album and that's the way they do it now.

"It's an original album. It's a really contemporary sound. People are going to get a surprise.

"People are assuming, I imagine, that it is going to be swing or jazz. It isn't. It's a nice modern feel, a Leon Jackson sound."

Leon is also busy rehearsing for the X Factor tour, which will be in Scotland later this month and he has been taking singing lessons.

He admitted: "I still have along, long way to go.

"I am getting vocal sessions. They help to build up my stamina.

"Also, I have had no formal training, so they are trying to take the foundations and make them better."

Leon said it was a "real shame" singer Amy Macdonald accused him of "lazyitis" when he pulled out of Edinburgh's Hogmanay party with tonsilitis.

He said: "I just acted on doctor's orders. I was genuinely ill. But she is entitled to her opinion."

Despite such trials, Leon said: "I'm just having a ball."

A nice positive article about Leon. He doesn`t actually say all original tracks though but full of original tracks - a few covers could be thrown in the mix, which is good because I guess an awful lot of his fans want at least one of their favs from the show. Interesting that it won`t be swing/jazz but contemporary. Does that mean pop or more in the style of Newton Faulkener/Paulo Nutini I wonder ?

I wouldn't mind betting it's in the style of Simon's other pop artists who haven't got a US guru on board. Think Westlife, Shayne Ward and Gareth Gate's debut album.

That is what I was thinking because they know pop sells so much better than the more niche contemporary ie Paulo Nutini/Newton Faulkener/James Morrison and an album of pop will appeal more to the teen side of his fanbase. I remember Shayne Ward talking about his debut album prior to it`s release and how he hoped to record an album in the style of Justin Timberlake, very upbeat, but what he had to record was an album of cheesy pop So long as Leon is happy with the end result that is the main thing

Actually, there seems to be far more Paulo Nutini and James Morrison types knocking about than there are decent male pop singers. Once one James Blunt has some success, we get swamped by the guitar wielding sound alikes

Me, I prefer some good pop any day, the only thing is, Simon Cowell and Good aren't really synonymous are they?

James Morrison sold 1.1million copies of his debut album in the UK - not so niche maybe. I'd say that singer songwriters have been doing well in recent years.

Will Youngs first album for Syco after PI was pop..yes a few Scandanavian tracks were thrown in but he was learning the ropes back then. The trick is to get a good start and then build from there..Will chose to do that away from Syco but stayed in the Sony fold for album no2...now he's on album N04.

Edit - marguerite and I were having similar thoughts. What ever happened to Daniel Beddingfield..he was good pop.

I'm confident that Leon has the vocal ability to make even cheesy pop songs sound good - The main thing I like about him is he hasn't got a typical boyband style vocal. For all that Shayne Ward was bigged up during the programme, his voice is similar to so many other young guys.

I agree, it is in his interest to sell well with a popular style until he gets established then to move towards a more creative style later on if he wants to.
I would think that it is the same for all the new and reality show artists signed with Sony

A word of warning though: After Series 1 Steve and Simon continously said the album would contain original material. It didn't. Simon changed his mind a few months before release.

Nothing is 100% nailed down..quite right. That would apply to Rhydian too of course.

While i do agree with you i am sure the success of Leona's album certainly made things very clear for SC re: what works and sells.

Thanks Chi for the original post

Towards the end of the year - probably like Leona's to use the new XF series to launch it from.

Rhydian is only due to start recording it in April, so it should be out October/November time

I think it starts in September.

I would be surprised if the launch dates clashed while competition is healthy to a degree i can't imagine Sony would want both released at the same time.

Absoultly. Leon is already working with Jorgen Elofsson on a couple of original tracks, so there is no question of an album full of covers I'm sure it's safe to say.

Whilst they say it's full of original songs, not just covers - it's also easy to remember that Leona even had a cover on hers. Simon Cowell will have the voting figures for the show (and will be the only person to know exactly how popular each song Leon sang on the show was), and will judge from that what to do with the album. If Leon walked away with voting the week that he sang "Relight My Fire" for example, he may very well sing that on the album.

If there is any song from the show that does find it's waty on to Leon's album (although no sign of that at this stage) it would more than likely be 'you don't know me', one would think...

But that's neither modern nor contemporary
