I've been quietly singing the praises of this young lady on this forum for months and her lovely debut album 'Alas I Cannot Swim' is released next week. Much sooner than I expected but thankfully it doesn't sound rushed. For the most part it's impressive, there are some average/less interesting songs but the moments of brilliance more than make up for it for me.

Considering that she wrote these songs at 17 or younger (she only turned 18 a few days ago), I think she's a real talent and hugely promising for the future. I'm sure she'll get some recognition but hopefully she won't get overhyped and overexposed at such a young age. A good place for you to start would be these music videos on youtube:

My Manic & I

Ghosts

Night Terror

Also, if you want to learn a little more about her read this Guardian interview and/or this Independent interview .

I've been listening to her for the past few days and am blown away by her... all the more for her age! But regardless she really has something to say.. and a prominent personality that really shines through in her music! I wish her all the best success and everyone should be having a listen to her!

Nice to see some replies, that doesn't always happen with my threads .

I should add that Laura can be heard on the new Mystery Jets single 'Young Love' which is pretty good and sometimes seen with a band called Noah and the Whale such as in this video (one of my favourites of last year).

Also, if you find yourself liking Laura, check out my DS music blog for more new artists in a similar vein .

Her song Night Terror is currently Single of the Week on ITunes which also means it's free!!

I really like this song, I'll definitely check out her others too.

I wasn't so keen on this, which makes me think I might not like the album either.

Laura was on Stephen Merchant's radio show recently to chat and play a few songs. You can listen to it here (fast forward to 1 hour 11 minutes). He's not a very good interviewer but he's funny and there's a good Katie Melua joke .

I reckon her voice has improved over the last year and could get even better. A year ago I doubt she could have pulled off a song like 'Your Only Doll'. That's why I'm excited about this woman, the potential is massive imo.

Some of it takes a few listens. I wasn't so keen on 'Night Terror' at first, but it's grown on me...

'Ghosts' is a beautiful song.

I often think that the music that doesn't take you instantly but grows on you is the kind you will listen to forever!!!!

Yes, the album tracks I wasn't sure about have grown on me as well. Most of the songs are quite subtle and understated so it won't be for everyone and I expect some people will miss the point completely and call her 'boring'.

It's a good time for new folk music though. I'm very much looking forward to Johnny Flynn's debut album which is out soon and he's also supporting Laura next month. I'm hoping he has some sort of success too because he's ace imo .
