Disk corruption with 0.21
gadgetmind
08-02-2008
Last night, it all went a bit pair-shaped. We got a little warning the night before as we had a programme that reset to the beginning when we FFd to about 3/4 of the way through, and the time bar and length of the prog didn't seem to match. But last night, we got a total lockup while trying to get the progs list, and after a reboot the progs list was a bit mad. Some stuff missing, some stuff repeated 2-3 times, and just general crazyness.

This can't be a left-over from early firmware as we replaced the HD 2-3 months ago and used humaxrw to move the contents of the old one across. I think this is new corruption from using the .21 firmware.

Anyway, I managed to stop my wife from madly deleting the duplicates by assuring her that, yes, she was making things worse, and kicked off humaxrw making a full backup of what we could get. I've now reformatted the disk and will tonight move everything we want back onto it. Some stuff has been lost but we're downloading this from "various places" so no big deal.

Anyone else had corruption with .21 ? We've jumped to this firmware from .06 and would go back again were it not for the convenience of the red/green delete stuff from the progs list.

Yes there are a significant number of reports if you look around the forum. It is hard to say at the moment whether things are worse than with previous versions. The situation needs watching.

Hi Ian

We seem to have a few post .21 glitches.

The green/yellow symbol appears on the Recorded Schedule during record - and last night the 8.00 Jamie at Home had it after recording finished.

The green/yellow in the 'old days' often meant that problems were on the way.

I recorded The Summits the other night - well it said I had - but it only recorded 3 minutes - it reported that it had recorded the full 1 hour - AND it was still 'recording' 7 hours later - and would not come out of standby.

A few days after .21 I emptied the disk and did a Format and total reset - but.....

I've got to feel that some other problems are down to the broadcasters.

So you have four contenders for the cause of the problem:

1. non-standard HD
2. old contents copied onto the drive using non-humax software
3. s/w version .21
4. hardware problem

Or the problem could be caused by a combination of 2, 3, or 4 of the above.

Statistically it's unlikely that .21 is the sole cause of the problem.

I did a like-for-like replacement as the original one went bad.

Yes, but I manage software projects for a living, and I know where my money is.

Ah sorry

I'd still put my money on the transferred recordings or a hardware fault though (not had any problems so far on .20 or .21)

Sounds like humaxrw corrupted the file system...

Writing things back to a 9200*** ...

I don't rule it out, but everything has been fine for a few months. Ah, well, one of those things, I guess.

The best approach might be to convert all the TS files I pulled off the box to AVIs or DVDs, but it's just so much easier to slap them back on with humaxrw ...

What version of HumaxRW are you using? See the wiki for what v1.08 was released to fix...

Also, AFAIK, the filesystem has not changed, so HumaxRW should work with v21, but we know that the EPG data changes slightly with each firmware revision so xyz321 is working on a new version for v21...

Ah, I guess I should have upgraded first, still on 1.04 !

Anyway, things got even worse as my wife turned the Humax on during the transfer, so I kicked it off again, but when the Humax was turned back on it said the recording list was empty.

I then decided not to bother with the transfer - I've moved some stuff to DVD, and some I've converted to AVI. For the rest I've just plugged the external USB HD that I grabbed the Humax contents on to directly into our media player (geexbox based) and we're watching stuff straight from this.

So, the Humax HD has had a fresh format, which is I suppose the safest approach.

fixed it by deleting both of the the overwritten/duplicate programme, and its been fine since.

There is a bug in versions prior to 1.08 which causes the Humax to delete the record list. This happens when files have been transferred onto an empty Humax disk (freshly formatted) using humaxrw. The fix is to upgrade or create one recording on the Humax, prior to using humaxrw to transfer the files.

Great, that fully explains what I've seen, so I'll be confident in using humaxrw in the future.

Interestingly, a few months ago, when I did a fully backup of my old HD to my new one, humaxrw worked just fine even going to a freshly formatted HD with version 1.04

Anyway, upgrade time!

Hmmm - so it wasn't caused by .21 then?

Yes, it would have been fine with a full backup because the first recording in humaxrw's list would be the first put back onto the disk. The first file has a different tag to the rest.

This problem doesn't arise with the new version.

The original corruption quite possibly was. I used humaxrw to do a full backup and there aren't any known issues for this case.

My latter problems were partly self imposed and partly due to using an old humaxrw, which is another form of self imposed. http://images.digitalspy.co.uk/forum/smilies/smile.gif

Dunno if it's connected or a different bug, but we just had two recordings go from the schedule as expected but never show in the the progs list. Both were scheduled when nothing else was recording and were using auto pad.

Most odd!

Time for a reformat.

But if you're prepred to first connect the disk to a PC, you can almost certainly get your recordings off using humaxrw. You *could* aso recover the recordings and/or move them back onto the HD after a reformat. Not as "clean" as a total wipe, but means you don't have to watch the old content on a PC!
