there will be a number in a red circle on the relevant app icon (sms, phone or mail) on the homescreen. that number is the amount of missed calls or unread emails or texts.

yeah but I mean e.g.on my XDA the light blinked red to tell me I have missed a call or got an unread txt.

How do we know without 'waking up' the device?

If your iphone is jailbroken, there is an application on the installer.app which will make the phone vibrate periodically when you have unread text, messed calls etc Not sure what the app is called but shouldn't be too hard to find on there
