I have a BT line as I live in the middle of nowhere, but my service is supplied by Virgin Media as I have their broadband package and get free evening and weekend calls to landlines.

Daytime calls to landlines and mobiles have been made using 18185, plus the obligitory 2 calls each month via BT to get the free caller display service.

Now what has been happening is my kids make an awful lot of very short calls to mobiles - up to 20 a day - all for calls that last 30-40 seconds. "Where are you, what you doing, are you coming out?" type of thing.

My last bill from 18185 was £27 for the month, virtually all made up from calls costing 11p (5p connection plus one minute at 6p).

Then last month I had an email from Virgin Mobile offering a SIM only package with 300 minutes and 300 texts every month for £10 per month on Pay as You Go, not contract. It's called the 300/300 package. It is only available to Virgin Media customers.

See: https://www.virginmobile.com/vm/webL...3D%C2%14%CA%E7

A quick calculation said that this would be a much cheaper way of making all our mobile calls.

Result: My orchid now bars mobiles all the time and landline calls in daytime, and we all use the Virgin mobile. One week has resulted in the use of 55 minutes and 27 texts.

I'll keep you informed of any further savings.

PS. Another search on the Virgin Mobile website resulted in buying a new Nokia 2310 for only £9.99 plus £2.99 delivery, which arrived next day.

I've cut my mobile use right back as not many of my outgoing calls are ones that can't wait till I get home. Result is I am saving a lot and talking more Mobiles are well over used for unnecessary calls.

First Telecom's minimum charge is only 1.2p, for example:

I use O2 pay and go Favourite place with the Your numbers add-on. A £10 top-up each month gives:

500 minutes to landlines from my postcode (which covers a big area)

1000 minutes or texts to my 10 nominated O2 numbers

An O2 treat of 25 texts

10% of the top-up back every three months

There is £5 left each month for other calls.
So I rarely use a landline.

Have you seen the price of their mobile calls? Up to 28.4p per minute. I also checked calls to Switzerland which I call sometimes - 5p per minute. 18185 charge 1p per minute.

This is one of the most expensive phone companies I have ever seen!

Exactly what I was thinking as I was looking at the website!
