Can someone help me and recommend a singer or band from the seventies or eighties that they think i would like. The bands i like at the moment are Bloc Party, The Killers, Foo Fighter, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Kooks. If someone could give me any suggestions i would be very thankful.

These are all worth getting a good 'Best Of' compilation:
David Bowie, T Rex, Slade, Blondie, Buzzcocks, Undertones, The Smiths, Talking Heads, Pixies, The Jam, The Clash, Squeeze, Elvis Costello, The Ramones, The Stranglers, The Sex Pistols, The Police.

Also, maybe The Cramps, Dead Kennedys, Patti Smith.

Given the bands listed by the OP, XTC might be a very good shout - and to their taste!

Free - One of the most underated bands of all time.

Humble Pie - Stevie Marriott was a very talented singer & musician. Again very underated and never got the recognition he deserved (just a personal view)

Stevie Marriott was superb. 'Tin Soldier' by The Small Faces is one of the best songs from the '60s (and any other decade) and their best ever.

I find it quite painful watching the lovely elfin-like cheeky Cockney, knowing he had such a tragic end to his short life and that he's no longer with us.

That's what makes the opening line of 'Tin Soldier' ironic to me, knowing how Steve died.

Oops - sorry for hi-jacking this thread by the way by going slightly off-topic.

All of the above are worth a listen - particularly all of the bands out of the Punk/New Wave era and post-punk 1980s stuff.

I have a weirdly eclectic taste in music - for instance, I will quite happily listen to Sister Sledge's 'greatest hits' and then put 'White man in hammersmith palais' by the Clash on.

I would re-emphasise The Jam, The Clash, Siouxsie and the banshees, The Cure, XTC, Blondie, Squeeze, Joy Division (especially the song 'Transmission' by Joy Division - I think you'll like that.)

My additions to the list would be to check out Radiohead's early material from 'the bends' and 'pablo honey' - if you like Bloc Party, I can envisage you loving the classic track 'Street spirit (fade out). Ok, Radiohead didn't release Pablo honey until 1993 but hey, some of their material is 15 years old now! Scary thought for me!

I would also recommend Lenny Kravitz - he is really underrated, and as you like the Chilis, Lenny's music is great for funky guitar riffs. Check out the classic 'rock n roll is dead' by Lenny Kravitz - I think it sounds like a Chili Peppers song. Lenny started producing and releasing material in the late 80s and he has a new album out at the moment too.

I also ORDER you (hehe - well, not quite order but you get my drift...) to listen to some Jimi Hendrix - you can get some excellent compilations, but if you fancy an original album, I'd get "Electric ladyland.' Jimi is technically a 60s artist because he died in 1970 but his influence on the Chilis and loads of other bands/artists is undeniable.

Rory Gallagher, just superb, one of the best guitarists you're likely to hear
The Kinks, simply because I love 'em

Pixies, Throwing Muses & Sonic Youth.

Three of the most influential bands of the alt rock scene.

Aerosmith were much better in the 70's/80's so check out their earlier stuff.

I think The Carpenters are a wonderful and very underrated band. They made wonderfully aranged music and Karen Carpenter must be the best female vocalist ever. Some of their best songs, in my opinion:

The amazing We've Only Just Begun -

Goodbye To Love, which deviates from their typical 'straight' style and is more rock guitarry than poppy -

One of their best straight pop songs, There's A Kind of Hush (All Over The World) -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXam4jl7hH0

And finally, this truly great cover of Desperado by the Eagles actually makes me cry her voice is so good -
