Cheeseless Pizza !
*** Linz ***

My OH has an aversion to cheese.... but thinks he would like pizza

Is there anyway I could make a pizza for him without cheese... what could bind it together??

I would simply LOVE to know....

Thanks.

Hmm im not sure why you need something to bind it together as the tomato sauce on the base will keep the toppings in place. When i have cheeseless pizza it has to have spicy chicken on it otherwise it severely lacks enough flavour.

What aspect of cheese doesn't he like? The texture? The flavour?

Maybe there's a vegan substitute for cheese that he'd get on with?

Alternatively, to my mind the whole appeal of pizza is based around the comforting deliciousness of warm bread, so he could try focaccia or panini for a similar effect, but without the cheese.

You can buy this vegan cheese in Waitrose - http://www.redwoodfoods.co.uk/produc...zly/index.html

They only stocked the Mature White Cheddar last time I checked.

As for a completely cheesless pizza, it's really not that hard. Just get some pizza bases (either ready-made or make your own), spread with tomato puree, and off you go. Sometimes I'll use sliced mushrooms to perform a similar job to the cheese on a normal pizza (kind of like the first layer after the tomato puree), and then put my topping on after that. Other times I'll cut the mushrooms a little thicker, and have them as part of the topping. Just be creative.

Hope that helps.

What she said ^^

I quite often eat cheeseless pizza. I use a passata sauce or sometimes just tomato puree.

As already indicated there is a vegan cheese called Cheezley. As it doesn't have any of the ingredients of normal cheese it may be suitable. There is unfortunately only one type in Waitrose but this site has loads and it keeps for ages. OopsJust saw the Unknown One put up the same link!

Actually Waitrose do their own cheeseless pizza. Chili and garlic. It's really excellent.

In northern Italy where my Dad is from they often have pizza with just a tomato base sauce and loads of garlic, sometimes with onion too.

There's a really good one in Pizza Express, Olives, garlic and Rocket with a bit of tomato sauce on. Its good with anchovies too. Should be easy to do at home?

I really want pizza now...

Cool.

Do you have a pizza stone to cook it on in the oven? That's how we cook ours. Put the oven on and let the stone get hot, slap the pizza in and about 7 mins later it's ready. Don't let the egdes go hard (or too hard). Drizzle the chili oil that comes in the sachet after you take it out and it's fantastic!

Cheese on pizza doesn't really taste like cheese does it.

I love that Pizza they sell in Waitrose. I was in Sorrento in Italy last summer and they do delicious pizza called Marinara which is just tomato with garlic on and it's also lovely ! I really wish all supermarkets would sell this style of Pizza as I don't have a Waitrose near me, but would love to buy this Pizza more often as it's so much healthier without the cheese!

Let's start a campaign for cheeseless pizza!

Excellent idea Ruby

Most people don't get it. They assume it tastes bland. But that's because they're used to rubbish pizzas that "need" flavour. A good quality pizza bas and tomato sauce with great ingredients is just excellent.

I'm going to try that next time! I always assume if it's not on the menu they won't make it - so if I ask for a Marinara style pizza with tomato and garlic they'll make it?

Yes!! I usually ask for some veggie based pizza and ask for it without cheese and add whatever toppings I feel like. They're very good.
