Ah an old "x.97" bargain on PC World. They never have them... ever.

It would be a shame if people bought a first generation product long since replaced instead of the latest model from Sammy which is still only 1.0 spec.

If you know exactly what you want then picking up discontinued stock can result in uber bargains but this isn't one of them.

This model was very "Buggy" apparently, however I can vouch for the BD P1400 which is a great player in all respects & if like me you just want to view a film & are not bothered about all the interactive stuff then it's profile 1 will not bother you in the slightest & it can be picked up at Richersounds for £199.95 on the VIP deal.

I'm not quite sure why people keep mentioning profile 1 as if it's somehow inferior to something, since profile 2 will not be around for a while & all it really adds is interactive features does it matter? I mean can we live without it & just how many people want it? or is it that the manufacturers are simply telling us we need it, wonder why that would be?

I understand there are people out there who have never listened to an audio commentary or viewed any extras in their DVD owning/renting lives and for them the bare bones Profile 1.0 is probably fine.

That said how p****d will they be if one day they buy a movie which has a feature they want to watch and their player doesn't support it but for less than they paid for theirs any of the latest models do support the features.

If you don't mind buying a UK 1.0 player when 1.1 are common in the US and about to appear this side of the pond then more power to you as long as you are aware of the limitations.

The DVD market is pretty split between those that value extras and those that prefer bare bones, with DVD it didn't really matter as the hardware was pretty much the same so the consumer chose the DVD release which suited them.

However with Blu-ray it's not just the media it's the hardware that determines the overall functionality and features, not a great situation to be in but not critical if you do your homework.

I'd second that - it's worth looking at the extra features offered by Profile 1.1 and 2.0-compliant hardware (Bonus View and BD-Live, respectively), and if they're something you're likely to want to use, wait a bit before getting one.

That said, I'd advise caution on getting a dedicated player of any description - dedicated HDM players available at the moment, whether HD DVD or Blu-ray, are a tad on the slow side.

As previously stated i have no interest in the slightest in the Bonus View or BD live, let those who NEED this sure go for 1.1 or 2 when it arrives. In the meantime I have great picture & sound quality & as for being slow; the last 2 movies I have watched take a whole 40 seconds from entering the tray to playing the movie! perhaps you get more patient as you get older?

In other words get a PS3, right

As things currently stand, IMO the PS3 is second to none for Blu-ray playback. However, it's not to everyone's taste, what with it being a games console, the wrong shape to fit into some people's home entertainment systems and such like. At the end of the day it's your call.

If you can cope with the limitations of some of the dedicated players, you can pick one up for somewhat less than you'd pay for a PS3. I'd avoid the Samsung BD-P1x00s, though. Sony and Panny are probably your best bet. If Profile 1.1 is a must-have and a PS3 isn't, then it might be worth waiting for the Panny DMP-BD30 (or even the BD50 if you want the full BD-Live experience, though there's no guarantee that we'll see one of those in the UK this year).
