When I switched from BT to Virgin Media, BT sent me a letter saying it was sorry to lose me. But it also said if I had changed my mind, contact them (BT) and they would stop the move. I would check with BT again as you could have been misinformed (Indian call centre maybe?).

Actually, if BT really did put that on your letter, I think that they are in breach of the rules. I have read some OFCOM rulings on 'unfair winback' or similar.

I don't see what's unfair about it. It said something like "Sorry to lose you as a customer, but if you change your mind, give us a ring, it's not too late". I don't still have the letter to quote 100%. But I did previously change my mind about three years ago and rang BT then to say I'd changed my mind and that's all I had to do. The change didn't go thru on the agreed date. I can't remember the firm I was going to change to. It may have been Tiscali but I'm not sure.

Tiscali are not the best for phone. I was with them for phone a few years back before they had Tiscali line rental and first 6 months or so all seemed fine but then I got two billing mistakes from them. I was also on Tiscali Anytime dial up at the time. Im glad I got rid of Tiscali nearly two years ago and I got everything with BT now. It tane me nearly a week for my calls to go back via BT when I asked Tiscali to end there phone service. When I was moving to BT broadband I asked Tiscali to closed my anytime dial up account they told me it easier for me to downgrade to pay and go. In end up after trying to tell them to close my account I downgraded to pay and go. Tiscali left my pay and go open for just over a year then closed my account altogether . As if they could not have done this in the first place.

I am surprised BT would do nothing.

When I signed up for tiscali broadband a couple of years ago I explicitly stated that I did not want them to take the phone on. They did not listen and on two separate occasions they tried to take it. In the first instance I managed to get hold of tiscali and stopped it. On the second I did not even get a letter from tiscali, just the one from BT saying sorry to lose you as a customer.

I had long since given up trying to get any sense out of tiscali so I phoned BT who answered straight away (funnily enough) and halted the process immediately. They also said they would be reporting the incident.

The switch never happened and unsurprisingly I heard nothing from tiscali who I subsequently binned. The best way to deal with these companies is to vote with your feet. I switched my broadband to adsl24 and have had an excellent and responsive service ever since.

This article in The Daily Mail is about slamming. Right at the end it says about BT stopping the move if you ask them.

A telling point in the article is in the one of the comments posted by a reader at the end:
Would those people who gave out their bank details over the phone please contact me because I need the funds.
So much for the people who claim they knew nothing about it or that they were just requesting information.
