It's suppose to take guts and courage to admit, what I'm about to admit, in THIS forum. But I have neither of those virtues (well I literally have guts, but not in the metaphorical "Superwoman" sense)... So I'm going to come out and say that I grudgingly love, and I do not use that word lightly, the latest Girls Aloud album.

My birthday is sneaking up behind me, well actually it's in front of me, but, never mind- and so one of my friends thought it would be a laugh if they bought me the latest Girls Aloud album..... I know, I know... 'Thou dost protest too much' I hear you all say... Well 'thou' does.... And that story about the friend is just that, a story. Don't ask why I was trying to make up a story.... not even I know.

Anyways, truth is I was at HMV yesterday and heard a lot of peeps from here say their album is surprisingly good... So I put my shades on and bought it... Luckily the place was a little bit empty.

Went home, felt guilty about spending my money on this CD... Put it in my CD ROM and suddenly found myself humming along to each song... Well apart from that "no no no" song.

And whilst listening to this album, I had a terrifying epiphany... I had just found my musical guilty pleasure... And this is coming from someone who is proud to call herself a Madonna fan, and who occasionally listens to Babara Streisand... I'm a camp gay man in a straight woman's body... don't diss!

Okay the point of this thread is this... I can't be the only one who can't help but like Girls Aloud's unquestionable perfect pop songs? Come on.... There must be at least one indie kid out there who secretly likes their music? Come out of the closet and join me.

True, but I'm not a cheapo sweetheart....

And also it was on sale for £5.99.... Which is pretty cheap for HMV. So I got it.

30 seconds to Mars' album is great.
I wouldn't quite call myself an indie kid, maybe an indie-emo-rock-90s-anti-folk-kid who can tolerate the Top 40 as long as it isn't utter crappy, repetetive drivel... But I like Girls Aloud, though I do try not to scream it from the roof tops.

I think some of their stuff is OK, and I'm mostly into the sort of rock music that frightens middle English parents.

I do like some pop though- the Scissor Sisters, mostly. And some Britpop is brilliant.

I think they've released some decent tracks to be honest.

Them winning the Brit award would be the funniest thing ever

Speaking of guilty pleasures...

The Sugarbabes are a similar deal.

I'm a session bassist, and to get the job as their 'live band' bassist would be awesome.

You'd be playing to massive crowds everynight and you'd have the best view of the girls! lol.

Also the money wouldn't be too shabby either and I'd do it for free!

I wouldn't have wasted money on a GA album; I'd have just bought one of their singles and played it over and over again

That said, 'Call the shots' is the best thing they've done by some distance.

Ahem, I, er, "came by" a copy of their greatest hits album and I've only gone so far as to convert it for my MP3 player at the moment. I haven't taken the irrevocable step of listening to it yet.

My usual type of music is prog or heavy rock.

*Hangs head in shame*

hey - bravery needs witnesses!

if you dig those gals, that's cool - they sound a bit synthetic to me but, if that's the sound you're into, check out Natalia who supported their UK tour last year - she's about to release her first single which sounds pretty cool to me............what do you think?

Absolutely my guilty pleasure too. Haven't gone as far as buying as any of their records but I love 'Biology' and 'Call the Shots'. I like that 'Call the Shots' has a bit of an 80s sound to it (being of an age where I can remember it from the first time round). I'm normally a rock/indie fan so not sure how they would sit with that. But there's nothing wrong with having eclectic tastes, life would be boring if I liked exactly the same music as everyone else

I absolutely adore Girls Aloud and the Sugababes

With regards to the latest GA album, I preferred "Chemistry" overall, but I love their next single "Can't Speak French" - can't stop playing it.

I think it's a shame you feel 'guilty' about it. Why? Is 'pop' a dirty word?

'Indie' quickly went from being DIY and non-conformist to being institutionalised and conservative and shorthand for a certain type of guitar-based music favoured by the NME. It is no more inherently radical or 'truthful' than mainstream pop.

Girls Aloud, probably as much through luck as design, have linked themselves with a consistently good production team who make the occasional gem. They've become a pop act that the broadsheets and the NME have deemed it's sort of OK to like. Just like the Sugababes a few years ago and the Pet Shop Boys before that.

I bought Girls Aloud greatest hits and thought about a third of it was excellent - I like 'Call the Shots' so I'll probably also take a chance on buying their album.

I am a bit wary though. It's had good reviews but I do feel like we're so starved of good pop right now that all sorts of albums like Britney Spears, Robyn and Hot Chip are getting critical acclaim when they're actually very patchy.

On first listen it seems like WOW, what a great album. Didn't really like Sexy (No, No, No) at all, but Call The Shots came along and wiped the floor with any of their previous work.

I think in going for a slightly more mature sound they've lost some of the spicy, fun and innovative style of 'Chemistry'.

'Control Of The Knife' is the standout track on the album, awesome tempo and production. As time's gone on though I listen to the album less and less, it's really quite bland in places. Can't stand the track 'Fling' for even five seconds.

Sugababes' 'Change' was an even more disappointing album, and that's coming from a big fan.

I'm quite the Hard Rock fan but I think it pretty much is the perfect pop song.

Originally written for Kelly Clarkson, she turned it down to go with her own material for 'My December'; talk about a bad decision!
