Mercy by Duffy
I predict that Duffy will be the biggest new singer for 2008, her voice is glorious. Just saw her performance on Jonathan Ross's TV show. Anyone else seen it? Definately going to get her album.

Saw her on Jonathan Ross too. The live music bit is usually when I switch off but this time I couldn't. Totally loved her. I don't know what the fuss about Adele is but this is something else...

I can't decide if I like her voice or not, sometimes I think she's good and sometimes not.

She is gash. I have more talent in my little finger when i use it to pick my nose.
People really need to start making up their own minds about what music they like. Its pathetic how much the british republic respond to these overhyped artists being pushed down our throats. Most people will probably like her because "everyone else does"-stop being a load of sheep. reprobates. |

Distinctive voice? I have a distinctive voice, it doesn't mean i'm a good singer!!
Wait..she doesn't even have a distinctive voice!! "the new dusty springfield". The fact is, to my ears, she sounds like a rehashed amy winehouse (just like that other fat rehashed amy winehouse out at the moment)-that the record execs have rolled out due to the current winehouse lull in the market because she is probably lying in a gutter somewhere opiated/coked out her nut. Im all for new and different artists, but duffy is not new and different  |

You don't give people enough credit, taste cannot be forced upon others. |

You haven't been reading all my posts then.
People as a whole are stupid-they generally follow what the NME (or "insert other publication, newspaper, fashion mag, news report etc etc ad nauseam") says. One person has the ability to be intelligent and think for themselves if they stray from the pack. This doesn't just apply to music, but everything within society. Well recognised in most evolution theories too-so yeah I have reason not to give "people" credit-its undeserved most of the time. Fact is, duffy is baws |

I heard her on JR the other night and thought she was great. I heard the song on the radio tonight and again I thought it was great. She reminds me of a sixties singer the way she sinsg, maybe Dusty Springfield or Petula Clark if they were starting out today? I haven't heard any Dusty or Petula recently though, so I might just be thinking of them wrongly.
I love this song and will definitely be downloading it

Not sure what "baws" is but if it is a derogatory remark, then no, it's your opinion, not a fact.

I'm forced to agree with Major Winters.
I first saw Duffy on Jools Holland's Hootenanny, and wasn't at all sure about any talent she may or may not have had. Her voice is certainly different, but I'm afraid she does seem to think she's the next Winehouse without actually being to sing too well. She's tolerable in small doses, but the number of times that Radio 2 was playing her latest single last week between 8am and 5pm has rapidly put me off her. Not that that's Duffy's fault. Radio 2 has for a while had a very bad habit of shoving a particular artist down the throat of listeners. |

This song rocks - I first heard it in November and glad they are playing it mainstream now.
It has a sound of Carmel and she looks a bit like Dolly Parton. |

She seems far too contrived and cynically manufactured to me. This wouldn't neccessarily matter if the quality was there but you've got to be extremely good to pull off that 60's retro pop/soul sound and she doesn't quite cut it imo.
I've said it before but if you want 60's inspired pop perfection check out a band called Lucky Soul and if you're looking for old skool soul from one of the best voices on the planet check out Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. It's kind of ridiculous that these two artists are still largely unknown whereas Duffy has shot straight to pop stardom. Not surprising, but ridiculous all the same. |

I suppose this type of Act is to be expected now.
We've had Robbie Williams/Westlife/Ray Quinn et al giving us diluted copies of the old swing stars - Sinatra etc, Now that Amy [obviously influenced by female singers like Billie Holiday and the music of the 60's] has had some success, we are bound to have the market flooded by copycat girls. The music industry do tend to take a popular formula and then saturate us with people doing the same thing. I think Duffy is such an Act. It will be interesting to see just how successful she becomes. To be honest, I do welcome a return to what I call proper songs. All this so called R'n'B* stuff we've had lately does not do it for me. 'Mercy' - to me is a real song, and she sings it ok. Reminds me vocally of Brenda Lee. Different style of song, but similar vocal tone IMO. So good luck to her. She's not new or different, but I welcome the attempt to bring 'real songs' back.* to me R'n'B is DrFeelgood and stuff like that, not Beyonce. |

I saw Duffy when I was in London last month. I had no idea who the hell she was, but I just happend to be at the Pigalle Club that night when she was playing. The first thing I thought was, "Here goes another singer jumping onto the 60's retro bandwagon". She was OK, but nothing wonderful. I'm just glad I got in for free and didn't pay to see her like everyone else.
