Just curious, I've got one of these phones coming to me in a few weeks and it'd be a great help if it worked without any sort of external GPS device.

Otherwise I'll have to use another GPS software I guess

Use the internal GPS and Nokia maps.

nokia maps work ok for route planning? My new job requires me to go to some very obscure places at the moment

I've only been using the phone as a sat nav for a couple of days now and am amazed how good it is. I've had it for months and when I first tried it I wasn't impressed. But that latest firmware and a-gps has transformed it. It's superb.

I'd consider a dedicated GPS device then. While the Nokia is decent backup device for use occasionally I wouldn't rely on it in place of a Garmin or similar.

If you really must use it as a dedicated GPS device you'll be better turning on AGPS mode, but make sure you have a data plan in place on your network or it will cost you a considerable amount on your phone bill.

THe AGPS mode uses hardly any data, and is only used for the initial fix, or if the unit loses signal (which it shouldn't do if put in the correct place). The only thing that WOULD cost a lot on the data front would be if the user hadn't downloaded the maps to the phone originally.
