Eggs

How many eggs is it safe to eat in a day?

I've been eating up to half a dozen daily recently, and a friend has just said that it 'isn't healthy'.

You should only eat 3 per week!!! No more!! Eggs are ok but too many is not good for you!

Sorry, I should also state I am on the Induction Phase of Atkins and apparently I can eat as many eggs as I like.

Just this recent comment that is bugging me.

You seriously should look at your diet - six a day is a lot and I love eggs too!! Try to get a more varied diet - too much of one thing is never good.

Also eggs can be *binding* so you could get constipated eating too many!! *God I have that thought now from the film Cool Hand Luke*

They are good for you in small doses, but they will increase your cholesterol if you eat loads of them. Half a dozen per day is NOT healthy at all.

But according to the Atkins book, they have the 'good' cholesterol that helps lower the 'bad' cholesterol.

Apparently.

I'm sceptical.

Read this:

I don't think there's proof either way, but personally I wouldn't eat more than about four or five eggs a week, even though I love them. Maybe it's safer to have more, I don't know, but why risk it? A diet dominated by one thing can't be healthy, whatever it is, and six eggs a day will be sending your cholesterol higher than before. I don't know though, maybe yours was really low to start with? It would be worth getting it checked though.

Which isn't true.

Do people still do this Atkins diet?

Eat as many eggs as you like, whole eating cholesterol will fur your arteries thing is bunkum.

Having plenty of cholesterol in your diet triggers the release of an enzyme which tells the liver to NOT make any of its own. The body closely regulates how much it needs, makes or uses.

Atkins is still popular and apparently has been proved in many long term studies to be the most effective at correcting blood lipid levels.

I regularly eat 4 or 5 eggs a day.

I don't think we have any real understanding about cholesterol levels and how our diet affects them. People I know who've been put on low cholesterol diets haven't seen it make a blind bit of difference to their levels.

So I wouldn't be too worried if I were you, eat as many as you like, don't stress about it, so long as you have a varied diet.

People I know who have become vegan have seen their chloresterol levels plummet.

nothing has been 'proven' and there are an equal number of studies that also say the opposite. That's what science is.

Well, I'm REALLY craving carbs now, on day three. I want sweets!

Trying to hold on until the shops close. Doesn't help that I live next door to a Co-Op...

If you're craving carbs on day three, something has gone wrong somewhere. Around the third or fourth day is when your body should have adjusted, and the only way to describe that feeling is that it's mildly euphoric. It's ace!

I think the eggs have something to do with it. As others have said, variety is important in a diet. Not necessarily for health, but for psychological reasons.

There are so many thousands of great things you can do with food on Atkins. If you're having trouble eating a lot of vegetables, then add some mayonnaise to salads.

A day?
That's 42 in a week.

I dread to think what your anal emissions are like!

Reportable to the relevant authorities probably , but it depends, I find boiled eggs are worse than fried scrambled or poached. Are you single OP? If yes at least you can let the trumpet sound freely!

People who eat diets that are higher in protein have less 'emissions' than the farty lentil eaters because they don't feed the gas producing bacteria with the sugars they crave.

Have you ever come across the phrase egg-bound?

3 a week is the figure I've often seen quoted. I love (free-range/organic) eggs and get through about 6 per week. How on earth can anybody get through 6 a day

Aha! You see, the average environmental hippy is actually causing a larger Carbon footprint than their carnivorous counterparts.
Should we introduce a hippy tax?!

Do you not get bored of them? How do you eat them? 6 boiled eggs a day? 6 fried a day? 1 massive omelette a day? I couldn't stomach eggs that often, I don't think!
