I wouldn't go as far to say I hate his material, but I know a lot of people who would. Personally I like one or two of his songs but I remember buying "in between dreams" for my girlfriend at the time and just thinking how little substance the album actually had. The songs on that album sounded too similar for my liking and bearing in mind the ex used to play the album incessantly, about two songs stand out on it for me. I will probably get some flak for saying this but I have found myself in a similar situation as yourself regarding a lot of other so-called critically acclaimed artists of the 2000s who to me sound very bland AND boring to listen to whilst driving. My problems have been with Dido, Coldplay and David Gray - everything they have done sounds way too similar for me. I think they're too cautious and don't experiment with their sound enough. Elevator music I like to call it. |
