Recently in Tesco I saw one of the Tesco (own brand?) Technica DVD players, think it was about £25.

Anyway on the box, one of the bullet points was *High Definition DVD player! Surely that's misleading. It only has a HDMI output and (possibly poorly) upscales.

I wonder how many people buy these thinking they will play HD DVD's.

Well it seems the use of HD in advertising relates purely to resolution and nothing to do with the initial production or the subsequent picture quality and well the use of HD for upscaling DVD players has been around for a year or so.

Anyone who thinks £25 buys a genuine HD player deserves everything they get but then again Tesco have a good returns policy, they refunded those who had bought a HD DVD player over xmas and then returned them due to the Warner announcement.

I noticed something similar last year in Sainsburys. I tried asking their staff but nobody seemed to know any more than what was on the POS. When I informed them of their error, they guy said he'd pass it on, but a week later the same POS was still in place. I did consider informing trading standards but never got round to it.

Right now it's pretty obvious from the price that it isn't a "true" HD player, but as the price difference gradually comes down I'm sure some people will be genuinely misled by this dubious advertising.

Lots of people think they have HD as soon as they get an HD ready TV with a digital tuner so I'm sure many have already been taken in by this.

On the other hand they're probably happy because they can boast down the pub about their new HD TV and DVD player.
