Hi folks,

sorry for asking a question that there is similar answers out there for, but I wanted to try and get a specific answer for the models I have got.

TV is a Panasonic Viera 37" LCD
Home theatre Panasonic SA PTX5
DVD is a Panasonic DMR EX77
Sky+ box

I would like to know what and how do I do the best and optimum set up. Whwn I purchased I thoughr that I would only require 2 x HDMI leads as I thought these advanced leads carried all the relevant info. However, to get my system set up I have had to use the following: 2 x HDMI leads, 2 x scart leads and the old fashioned red/white audio leads. I still have leads galore all over the place at the rear of the unit. I had to use the audio leads to get TV sound to my home theatre.
Could anyone advise if this is the only way of setting up, or not. I am also concerned that i'm not getting the best out of the HDMI upscaling etc.
One more thing, is it possible, after correct set up, to be able to record from the sky+ box direct to the DVD players HDD?
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.
James

Sky+ TV Scart to DVDR AV2 (with both set to RGB)
DVDR HDMI to TV.
Sky+ VCR Scart to TV AV1 or AV2
Tv audio out to Home Theatre Audio in.

To record Sky set DVDRs input to A2.

Thanks John,

I take it that these systems won't work with just HDMI leads then and audio leads and scarts still required? Bit misleading from the manufacturer.
What does 'set to RGB' mean?
Does anyone know how the upscaling works then, or does it do it automatically?

Regards James

Since Sky+ doesn't have an HDMI output (SkyHD does) the scart is needed so you can record from Sky in the best possible way.
On the Sky+ "Services", "Picture Settings", "Video Output" menu set the video output to RGB (instead of PAL), also make sure "Scart Control" is set to "On" and "Picture Format" is set to 16x9 Widescreen.
Upscaling will be done automatically by your panel.

Cheers John, that has deffo improved the picture. And, I guess now the 16:9 format is set my screen menu, in sky, won't keep dissapearing at the bottom, or the screen size keep changing.

At present I do go into input select ob the DVDR and select the sky channel, annoyingly though it isn't possible to use the timer I have to manually start and stop (bit of a pain last thing at night as the thing then records all night using up hard drive. I wish there was a way of part deleting a programme.

I guess audio leads are still a must though. Strange though you would think the HDMI would carry that, it does work with a cd playing or dvd, but needs to be connected for the tv sound to come through the surround sound.

Cheers mate.
