I will assume for legal reasons that you are talking about non-copyright DVDs of home movies and the like

Most likely cause is the DVD player is set to S-Video format - assuming you are using a SCART lead between the two. Most VCRs will only accept Composite (may be called CVBS or PAL or just Video).

In a SCART lead S-Video "borrows" the composite pin and one of the RGB pins for the two video components. The Composite pin carries the black & white component hence why you could be getting only black & white on the VCR.

Try switching the DVD output to composite and see if that makes a difference.

Of course commercial DVDs may have other copy protection in place which may prevent you making a viewable copy. As circumventing copy protection is basically illegal we cannot discuss any more....

Another possibility is that the DVD is Region 1 (NTSC) and trying to record in PAL on the video?

You posted your query yesterday at 13:56.
You got two replies yesterday with suggestions which you haven't had the grace to acknowledge and you post again today in the same thread with something totally unrelated.
