hi peeps

as the title says. I went to the o2 shop then it struck me, I wanted a decent camera on my phone and I own an ipod. So I turned around and went back to work upstairs.

my question is this.....

Has anyone said that to themselves, then gone and bought it and it is the best thing since slice bread or really disappointed?

Lets not turn this into a "the ipod is rubbish or great topic", i just want to hear from people that are relevent to my question

I didn't buy one for pretty much the same reasons as you. My view at the time it came out was that it's a £199 ipod touch plus £70 for a phone, so I'll get one when I'm ready to replace my ipod.

no, i've never considered buying a phone based on its camera. it would be nice if there were such a thing as phone with a decent compact camera in it, but there isn't.

There was a comparative review of 5Megapixel compact cameras and 5 Megapixel camera phones last year. Guess which had the better lens and best picture quality? Yep, camera phones. In particular the Nokia N95 came top.

It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone with an interest in photography. The compact camera market reached saturation some time ago. The impetus to innovate moved to the camera phone market. And you get to sell them a new one next year!

i use an slr so i supposed i'm used to that level of quality. prking: were the compacts in that comparison any good? actually if that comparison is online i'd love to see the various shots.

I'm quite happy with mine, but I'd certainly agree the camera is poor by phone standards, and the lack of any light/flash is crippling for it.

When I have images or videos on my phone, where they've been pre-loaded by me or taken by my 5 Megapixel Camera - I like to be able to Bluetooth them to people in the room.

Unfortunately, you can't do that with an iphone.

Some have said it may come one day but IMHO - that's not good enough. It also may never come. Ever.

In relation to the Original Posters' overall question; thanks to software such as JoikuSpot, it's now possible to connect an Ipod touch to a traditional, higher specification phone (any Nokia running S60 v3) using WiFi and enjoy 3.5G Safari Web Surfing using a higher capacity ipod without having to pay a one off purchase premium and a subsequent 18 month contract to o2 for 2.75G s-l-o-w browsing.

The camera could be better but its fine for what it is - a phone camera. If I am going on holiday, to a concert, football match, carnival or what have you I will carry a proper camera with me.

For everything else it does the job adequately.

Take a look at photos taken with the iPhone on Flickr

so your nokia becomes a wifi router?

Yep, certainly does.

http://www.joikuspot.com/ has the details. Free download too.

It's in Beta the moment, but the only problem I've had with it so far is the lack of encryption.

I agree, no one even slightly serious, or caring about photography would use a phone as their main camera. I use my phone cam to snap a pic of the bus timetable rather than writing it down, but I'd never dream of taking my holiday pics etc on it.

I don't think Apple ever intended the iPhone cam to compare to SLRs etc.

I also agree, even the cheapest digitial-cam is better than a camera-phone if you compare a 5mpxel sony/cannon jobby they will always look better than the N95 etc. as they have better lenses etc. It's not just the megapixels that count.

Source?

Everything I have read has said the opposite.

The N95's camera is better than my old compact camera. I'd never use it for 'photography' like I use my Fujifilm bridge camera on holiday etc. But it's taken some great shots out and about and when I don't want to carry a camera. It's more than good enough for night out, kids in the park, friends in the pub, just spotted something interesting type shots and rivals the smaller compact cameras.

Here's an article comparing an N95, an N93 and a Canon SLR:

Exactly! Isn't this the point of Camera Phones in the first place?!?

I still have a 'proper' Camera but I'd never dream of taking it with me everywhere I go!

It's just nice to know if I do want to make the effort of taking a picture of something while I'm out, I'll be able to make out what it's of. And for me, that involves having something with a LED or Flash for night time or indoor shots.

Indeed. And I've taken some wonderful shots (including normally difficult sunsets, Christmas lantern parades etc) on my N95 that my previous Samsung 4MP camera wouldn't have managed.

I was a snob about camera phones until I got my N95.

ok my thoughts of the iphone.....

Camera - Terrible
Web browsing - Amazing (hey I was brought up on wap lol)
Music playing - brilliant BUT my CX300 earphones dont fit in it.

I liked the weather function, the keyboard was easy for me to use. I just kept playing with the iphone on the bus and train.

So do I still want it? Hell yeah. Sacrifice a decent camera for Internet on the move, a music player, and a large screen to watch those TV programs/movies I download.

Am I going to get one? If I need a new ipod, i think i will.

As you can see i am firmly STILL on the fence
