Hi guys

Am fuming I really am tonight . Hope this makes sense.

I changed from Virgin (ex ntl) to BT last month and when I was talking to the gentleman when placing my order for a phone line I specifically mentioned that I wanted to be ex-directory when he asked if I wanted to be put in the phone book. Well tonight I get a nuisance call and am puzzled as to why, so I go online to check if I am listed and sure enough there's my name, number and address (tried on 2 different websites) when it shouldn't be there.

Am I missing something or do they take a while before making your number ex-directory?

I've been on the TPS website and have signed up but I can't remember now when I did it. I know it can take a month or so before you notice any changes.

Was always ex-directory in the past and rarely in the 10 years I was with the other company did I have any nuisance calls.

Being XD normally has nothing to do with the reception of 'cold calls' - such companies use sequential diallers, not telephone books (online or otherwise).

The good ones then have software to interrogate the TPS database and omit dialling any shown thereon - but they don't check for and ignore XD numbers. Others (mainly with call centres overseas) just let their computers do the dialling.

I would write and complain to BT. They tried this with me too. I told them I don't want doors and windows people phoning me up and they better remove my details from the book pronto or I will sue them for causing my household to be harassed by people I did not wish to speak to!

To add to what Heinz said above, I think you are both missing a vital point here. In todays world, being "ex-directory" doesn't make it impossible to find your number, just a tiny bit harder!

The only way to be guaranteed of not getting any cold-calls whatsoever is to not have a telephone. (regardless of the TPS - who have little bite anyway and none against off-shore call centres/companies). You call always screen incoming calls using caller display, or block calls who withhold their number. Relying on being "ex-directory" to avoid these calls is very naive in my opinion.

LCDMAN..............yes I am registered with the TPS.

Thanks guys for taking the time to respond.

This morning I rang an 0845 number which I found in the front of the phone book (deals with confidentiality) and the lady I spoke to was very nice and she apologised for them not making my telephone number ex-directory in the first place. She told me it would be sorted today and a letter of confirmation will be posted out so we shall see over the coming days if she does what should have been done in the first place.

I appreciate that being xd doesn't necessarily stop bogus callers but as I said in my op I very rarely had them with the other company so I wanted to make sure that I stayed xd with BT.

To LCDMAN

I usually screen callers before I answer but unfortunately my hubby had answered before I could tell him to leave it.

As for caller ID I have requested this a number of times but they keep telling me there is a fault although they didn't tell me that when I placed my order for the phone line installation.

Thanks again.

To stop people ringing you we just say one minute put the phone down and go and make a cup of tea, or just leave it there and watch tv and then go back to it five to ten minutes later, I was x directory with Virgin but I still got calls for the other person who had the phone number before me, I am now moving onto BT next week, they are cheaper than Virgin

I registered with TPS about three years ago and after the first month I think I've had one cold call.

I'm not sure why I don't get sequential dialler calls anymore but I'm certainly not complaining!
