Atkins diet
MrsSpoon
13-02-2008
I am getting so sick of tuna, mackrell, eggs, chicken, cheese and tomatoes that I am thinking of breaking my Atkins diet which I have been on for two weeks. I don't even feel like I have lost any weight at all but I have cheated by having white wine and the odd glass of Gin and Tonic.

Any suggestions on what else is OK to eat on the Atkins diet other than stop the booze altogether?

Mrs spoon, I do feel for you as I've tried it myself but I gained weight once I broke the diet. Any diet that cuts out whole food groups is going to be restricting and not easy to stick to.

What I do now is try to avoid carbs (e.g. potatoes, pasta) at dinner as we generally burn a lot less energy during the evening so carbs aren't really needed. I have carbs for breakfast and lunch. Depends on your activity level in the evenings of course but it's a solution that doesn't fully restrict you

I did it before, actually lost nearly a stone in a couple of weeks, but as soon as I broke it it all cmae back on.
I found it a really difficult diet to stick to, simply because I am not a huge fan of meat and would normally eat it once or twice a week. So I got incredibly bored.
I'm on weight watchers at the moment, only 1 week, but I've lost 2.5 lbs I'm really thrilled as have been procrastinating forever. Now that the evenings are getting brighter, I am going to go walking in the evenings also.

If you have been on it for two weeks your passed the induction stage...so you can slowly up your carb intake.
Its a hard diet to follow and imo not a healthy one, not that Im saying it doesnt work.
I think weightwatchers or something similar would be easier and get just as good results . Oh and you would be allowed a glass or two of wine on that.

Those are all great foods to have on induction, but if you're bored, there are gazillions more! All meats, most vegetables: what more do you need. If you're still in Induction, you can have half an avocado if you want something a bit exotic.

All alcohol in the induction period is a definite no, and definitely the reason why you don't feel as though you've lost. Alcohol is a diuretic, so your body is less hydrated and will retain water. A great deal of any initial weight loss is water, so it's important not to give your body a reason to hold onto it.

Plus, spirits are one thing, but white wine is even worse: not only is it alcoholic, but it contains carbs! If you absolutely must have a drink, stick to the gin.

But keep drinking that water! Two litres every day. It's the biggest reason why people stall when starting Atkins. It'll also help with "induction flu" (headaches), if you have that. It's great to drink water - there are so many added benefits.

I tried the Atkins but was seriously daydreaming about pizza and bread all the time after about two months.

My current health kick (since last July, with a break over Xmas) has been focused around lots of exercise Monday-Thursday and eating loads of veggies during the week in soups and stews and eating and drinking whatever I want at the weekend. I aim to lose a modest pound a week and so far it's working well.

I could never do the atkins!

If i couldnt eat carbs i wouldnt have any energy. Plus i dont eat meat so it would be seriously impossible...

Yes you can do it because you don't need carbs for energy you need fat, and assuming you are a 'proper' vegetarian and not just picky, yes you can still do it. All your skepticisms answered here:

Dr Atkins was clinically obese when he died. Say no more.

That is also completely wrong. He was heavy due to oedema due to organ failure after his head injury, which was, contrary to those who are ignorant of the facts, the cause of his death.

Snopes suggests it is less clear cut (http://www.snopes.com/medical/doctor/atkins.asp):

Quote:
“The state of Robert Atkins' health is open to debate. Thanks to his death certificate we know Atkins was 258 pounds at the time of his death. Yet according to a copy of his medical records, as turned over to USA Today by the diet guru's widow, Atkins weighed 195 pounds upon admission to the hospital following his fall. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's body-mass index calculator, at 258 pounds, the 6-foot-tall Atkins would have qualified as obese.”

Also completely wrong. Obesity is only obesity if the weight is fat but as the BMI is well known as being notoriously inaccurate and, as any other doctor will agree with me, being on a life support machine when you are being drip fed liquids, on steroids and your organs have failed you swell up like a balloon and can gain 50lbs of water weight almost overnight. Some people swell so badly their skin splits. I've seen it hundreds of times.

That article is about the cause of death, I never said he died because of his obesity.

So why mention it then.

Because the inventor of The Atkins Diet was clinically obese.

If I need to loose weight quick I do Atkins. The most I've lost is a stone and 1 dress size in 2 weeks. I'm feeling a bit fat at the moment so started on Friday and today (Monday) I've lost 7lbs. I should probably mention that I'm a keen runner too though.... and I've never had any issues with low energy levels unless I tgry to run more than 5/6 miles more than, say, 4 times a week.
