System Update
Redster
13-02-2008
Was I the only one who recieved a system update on my Tiscali+ box last night ? Might be the one promised to fix the hard drive noise issue. Only problem is I don't know if it installed correctly as it seemed to lock my box up. I left it doing the update (at 3 when it counts down) and when I came back the box was off (well at least no signal to the scart socket) but the light was on. Left it 5 mins, no change so had to flick the switch at the back. That brought it back to life, but not sure if I should have done or if it was in the middle of something. It worked fine all night, but is there anyway (apart from the noise) if I can tell if the install worked ?

My box stayed on 3 for quite a long time but started up successfully afterwards. I guess if the update didn't work you'd either be left with a dead box, or the box would try again.

It does seem less noisy when on standby now, it's noticeably a hard disk whine without the loud fan.

Forgot to check this last night, but I wonder if there have been any improvements to the way HDMI is handeled? On my TV (Sony Bravia) I'm actually using RGB in preference to HDMI because I don't like the way everything is output in 16:9, so 4:3 content is stretched out and there's no way to change it, plus the way the trailers in the TV Guide are shrunk down to postage stamp size for no apparent reason. I'm sure the box is capable of outputting 4:3 content as intended because sometimes the aspect ratio jumps around a little before settling on stretchyvision.

I think the update was to allow Dave to be sourced in from DTT.

Update has fixed the quarter-sized trailer over HDMI problem but 4:3 content is still stretched. Box seems quieter. Dave does indeed now come through the aerial. Getting better but not quite there yet!
