Hi there, just bought an iphone (still locked to 02) & basically want to use my existing 02 contract sim in the phone.
I obviously don't want to sign another 18 month contract with 02 (as i recently had an upgrade with them already) and I don't necessarily want the phone 'unlocked' as such.
I just want to get through the iphone activation process & be able to use my existing sim card.
The phone did come with a brand new 02 Sim in it, so what i'd like to know is:

1)do i have to use that particular sim to activate it or can i activate it using my own 02 sim?

2)how can i get through the activation process (without entering into another 02 contract)?

3) how can i tell which firmware (v 1.1.1./1.1.2/1.1.3) i've got on my phone?

All replies will be greatly appreciated.

1) An O2 iPhone SIM is needed, not a standard SIM
2) You can't
3) Use the menu

You will have to jailbreak the iPhone to use your existing SIM.

1) OK
2) Others have done this (so it can be done ......just don't know how)
3) can't use anything at the moment. All i'm seeing is the itunes logo with the docking cable icon underneath it.......and Emergency calls only.

Is jailbreaking pretty easy or should i let someone who 'knows what they're doing' deal with that?

you can't activate officially with your existing o2 sim.

your phone should be 1.1.3. there are various guides out there on jailbreaking and unlocking. certainly with 1.1.2 you could jailbreak and use any o2 sim. i'm not sure if that's possible with 1.1.3. i did read there is some sort of lockdown file in 1.1.3 preventing this. although no doubt the file can be changed. probably the best thing to do is to jailbreak and unlock. google geohot who is the fellow who has recently worked out how to unlock 1.1.2 and 1.1.3.

Thanks Sananda, but i don't know how to tell whether my phone is 1.1.1./1.1.2 or 1.1.3. (?)

I purchased it off Ebay & all i know is that it's still locked & it's an 02 phone (as opposed to a USA A T&T one).

Try ZiPhone, which should jailbreak an OOTB 1.1.2/1.1.3 and allow you to use an o2 SIM:

To be honest, i'm gonna pay the £30 to get my local phone shop to unlock/jailbreak/upgrade it for me.

It's too much hassle otherwise.

I got the phone quite cheap, so £30 ain't too disasterous.

Thanks for the advice though guys.

Just done that myself with a 1.1.2 phone bought from Carphone wharehouse last December to use on the Orange network, very simple to do and only took a few minutes.

Ahh ok. Cos I wanted an iphone but I wouldnt pass a credit check so if i bought one from CPW and jailbreaked it or whatever it is in theory I could use my O2 PAYG SIM in it? Wouldnt O2 be on at me about the contract though?

Sorry I know nothing about it.

If your worried about any comeback either buy one from the Apple store with cash and give a false name and address.

Or just buy one and if anyone contacts you asking why you never activated it with O2 say you bought it to give to a friend but you have no contact with this friend anymore.

If your jailbreaking it your voiding any warranty anyway.

i'm using an o2 pay and go sim in my iphone. there's no credit check or any obligation to enter into a contract at the apple store. apparently cpw make customers sign something but i don't think it's an agreement to sign up for a contract.

CPW make you sign a sales agreement, which basically says you are required to enter into the o2 contract to be able to use it, and you can only return it if you fail the credit check.

by which they mean, i think, that you agree that you are aware that none of the features of iphone such as ipod and internet browsing work without having activated the phone which takes place when you enter into the appropriate contract with o2. i don't think it means that you agree that you WILL enter into that contract.

at least that was my understanding from seeing a copy of the cpw agreement posted on another forum. of course, they may have a different agreement now.

the easiest thing is to buy from apple where there are no agreements to sign.

actually the easiest thing would be if these phones were just sold unlocked but apple want the money from the revenue sharing agreement with o2.
