Stopping an artist trying to obtain an exclusive trademark on a name DOES NOT constitute suing them.

If the Yoko bashers would bother to read the story properly and not jump on the bandwagon of "Dragon lady" etc etc they would see that Lennon Murphy actually wrote to Yoko many years ago about her name and Yoko had no objections whatsoever.

The problem seems that the girl has been badly advised on the trademark thing and Mrs Lennon is merely pointing out that she cant really do it.

Sorry to have to pee on the fireworks of Yoko haters but she hasnt actually done anything wrong on this one.

And a little message to you all - . .. ...
(for the Yoko fans out there !)

The girl's birth name is Lennon Murphy, so she is using her real name!!!!
Isn't Ms Ono overreacting a bit?”

Let me think. McCartney all over the news right now with his divorce and pending loss of money. Lennon..... nowhere to be seen right now.

Seems to me she just hates Paul having any kind of attention, she always has done, and she feels John deserves more press coverage and she'll do pretty much anything to get his name out there somewhere.

I read that John's son doesn't actually care, and quite rightly because it's her birth name and she didn't choose it. Obviously Yoko just doesn't care what anyone else thinks.

She still changed her mind about it, after giving the go-ahead originally, didn't she?

Yoko Ono is a lot like Tony Blair - Evil to the bone & destroy everything great every chance they get .

After hearing this new artist, I think she has a great talent and a fresh rock sound.

I wish her all the luck & Success in the world

but yoko isnt suing her for using her own name, the girl tried to get exclusive rights to the name lennon, THAT is what yoko is, quite rightly, complaining about.

problem is that the other performer NOT protecting her name would also be thought culpable in "the American way" - there is no likely 'passing off' as John Lennon, but there are instances where bands and personal names are similar.

I thought Richmond Fontaine was just somebody's name - even though I saw them!

I can't see why she can't get exclusive rights to the name Lennon Murphy, but obviously not Lennon on it's own. It's pretty normal in the entertainment industry to change your name if it'a the same as someone established. But since there is no other Lennon Murphy that would be ok. Maybe she's going after the name 'Lennon' in the same way that Cher and Rhianna are just known by their single names and that might be the objection by Yoko and I can see the problems that might arise.

I can't see that Elvis Costello or Robbie Coltrane would have got away with "Elvis" and "Coltrane" respectively, so it seems unrealistic for Lennon-Murphy to want "Lennon".

years ago, we represented some domain-grabbers but after a few successes at getting businesses to pay up for domains, some determined City lawyers took us on and the cyber-squatters went on to other 'scams' rather than pay to fight.

It seems Yokos actions were quite reasonable in reality, but because of who she is she will get flak.

As poor Lennon Murphy explains on her website, if she had been making money out of people buying her stuff by mistake she'd be rolling in it, but she can't even afford a lawyer.

Hopefully her label will help her out on that front, especially as they went to Yoko's people to check first.

in my experience, until bands are successful, they end up paying the lawyers themselves...which is why I'm owed money and not 'rolling in it' myself

Lennon doesnt have a label, that was in 2001. Didnt Arista go bust by the way? She's now just an independant artist, so its not surprising she cant afford a lawyer, then again i'm not surprised she cant register the name Lennon, but fair play for trying.
I saw her play last year opening for Soil, and met her too, bought her cd which she was kind enough to sign, and i like the music, and i'm sure some of this is for getting some publicity. Maybe then she'll get some airplay and backing.
She's currently got a metal project going www.myspace.com/devilsgift
