I have a glass tv stand that can hold up to a 40" tv or possible 42", i have changed my tv from a 37" and am considering a a 46".

would the stand be able to hold the weight? if i position the tv over the rear support?

Average 42" plasma comes in at around 30kgs, I'm assuming the model you are looking at is LCD, may be the Sony 46", this comes in at 38Kgs inclusive of stand.

If the stand is from a reputable manufacturer I'd say it would cope with the weight, I have a friend who has a 55Kg 50" on a stand designed for 42" and it's still in one piece after 2yrs.

If in doubt and for piece of mind you will need to source a new stand.

Generally stands for larger TV's are wider - so the glass needs to be stronger because it's supporting a greater span.

So a smaller stand will probably be perfectly fine - and should give the design weight anyway.

If it will support a 42" plasma then a 46" LCD is no problem, as plasma is generally a LOT heavier than LCD.
