Talking in songs
highwayman_ne

Why do artists occasionally have a song with a “talking” bit which doesn’t seem to fit in with the rest of the song and makes an otherwise ok song seem cringe worthy during the talking?

A recent example would be Be Mine by Robyn. Although not my type of music, the strange talking bit about the scarf just sounds embarrassing. I’m not having ago at the whole song – just the talking bit.

I also don’t mean tracks which are purely talking such as Choose Life by PF Project (Trainspotting).

What do you think? Is it just me who finds these talking bits weird?

If you want to hear a weird song with talking, you could try some of Guns N' Roses songs. "Coma" springs to mind. It's a 10 minute long song and in the middle there are doctors talking in a hospital theatre, apparently Axl did have to go to hospital for something serious and decided to bring the doctors who treated him into the recording studio to actually recreate what they said on the day. Talk about excessive. Then there are the girls later in the song complaining to Axl and their voices are all played over each other.

Still, it is a good song. They also had a little talking part in the middle of their version of Knockin' On Heaven's Door. There are some others too but I'm at work and can't think of them all now...!

I think its just to split the song up a bit? It doesn't really work for me in slow songs, but in heavier rockier music it usually sounds great. One example I can think of is the everlasting gaze by the smashing pumpkins

Talking during songs either sounds great or it's very irritating, there's not usually much in between.

One that works: Kool Thing by Sonic Youth.

One that doesn't: Never Ever by All Saints (but that's such an awful song anyway. )

Another one that works is "Under your thumb" by Godley and Creme. It works because when he says "So I pick up a newspaper and read, and I notice something very strange indeed", it fits in well with the whole narrative tone of the song.
Other than that, I can't really think of any that have talking, apart from "Forgotten sons" by Marillion, but that's really part of a montage of TV audio etc...

I remember the talking bit out of 'Whole Again - Atomic Kitten'
Cheesy!
