We're on BT's Option 1 which apparently brings you free weekends (no idea, I'm going with mum's word here). She's just received details of a Free Weekends and Evenings offer - Option 2 for the same price.

It looks good... but is there a catch?

Until 1-2-08, those on BT Together Option 1 (now being renamed the Unlimited Weekend Plan) were charged a flat rate 4½p for their evening and weekend UK 01/02/03 calls of up to an hour.

Since 1 February, those weekend calls have been completely free but, for a while, evening calls remain at the flat rate 4½p for up to an hour.

However, the catch arrives, appropriately enough, on 1 April when those evening calls suddenly start costing 6p connection + 1½p/minute. So, instead of 4½p, a one hour call suddenly costs 96p if you do nothing.

BT are offering those who are willing to agree to a 12 month 'rolling contract' to 'upgrade' to BT Together Option 2 (now being renamed the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan) and, instead of having to pay £3.45 for it (to be £2.70 from 1-4-08), it'll be free and, for those signing up, free evening UK 01/02/03 calls of up to an hour join free weekend calls.

So which would be the best choice? Would we be losing out by remaining on Option 1?

thought the line rental is rising to compensate for providing free calls,it's not really a significant change if every call less than one hour was costing less than 10p.
I signed up for it only because my contract ended recently, and i was offered various discounts, but once i had a think about it i couldn't see a lot of difference between paying less than 10p for an hour or getting it free with increased line rental charges.

'You only need to pay the price of line rental at £10.50 a month to get free UK Evening & Weekend calls with a 12 month renewable contract' this is from the bt web site it says that the option 2 package is with a 12 month contract

You've missed the point though. We're not talking about the difference between a 4½p call and a FREE call. From 1-4-08, if you stay on BT Together Option 1, a one hour evening call will cost 96p (instead of the 4½p it costs now).

BT Together Option 1 - Pre-1 February
Weekend 01,02,03 calls of less than an hour - 4½p
Weekday evening 01,02,03 calls of less than an hour - 4½p

BT Together Option 1 - NOW
Weekend 01,02,03 calls of less than an hour - FREE
Weekday evening 01,02,03 calls of less than an hour - 4½p

BT Together Option 1 - From 1 April
Weekend 01,02,03 calls of less than an hour - FREE
Weekday evening 01,02,03 calls - 6p connection + 1½p per minute.

I always thought that the '4.5p up to an hour' was also subject to a 6 pence call set up fee, thus making it actually 10.5p for the hour? To be fair to BT, I think the changes are their to try and match and compete better with competitors. Particularly in relation to the amount of customers that must CPS their calls to other providers to take advantage of free evening and weekends calls, or anytime calls. Yes the average Option 1 customer will lose out, but BT is informing every customer of the changes and on top of this is trying to award loyalty to customers who are willing to stay with them for the next 12 months by giving them free evening and weekend calls. The prices really just reflect a change in the market and the customer does get more for their money if they sign up to the 12 month renewable contract with the company.

I signed up to the option 2 12 months the other week. Have received my confirmation letter from them too about it.

Apparently they charge the full £13 odds (which is the line rental plus the £3 odd for the evening calls) but in your benefits part they refund you the £3 odd.

I didnt really make a lot of calls anyway but I might start trying to be a more chatty person now (at weekends and evenings anyway)

Just have to remember to make that ONE qualifying chargeable call per month. Asda might get a call just to ask their opening hours.

Keeping line rental with BT you can get inclusive evening and weekend calls for free - that is £0.00 per month with Primus (Primus Saver 2), each call can last 90 mins instead of 60 mins, daytime rate doesn't start until 08:00 so an extra 2 hours each weekday of inclusive calls, plus you can add the free option of penny mobile, this gives calls to UK mobiles for 20p for up to 20 mins.

I think there is some confusion with my BT bill for this month.

I changed over the other week to this FREE weekends and FREE evenings (with the 12month contract) but my paperless bill is now there for reading and instead of my normal sort off £12-£14 bill, its showing a credit of 9p ???

I just dont get it. will have to phone them....even though I probably shouldnt...I just dont trust them

Cant get them tonight but was looking further at it while on hold.. Looks like maybe they credit you with the cost of the old evening calls quarterly but guess then recharge again each month (I'm on monthly DD)

Feb 08 Credit 01 of 12 - free evening and weekend calls for 12 months
-2.94
Mar 08 Credit 02 of 12 - free evening and weekend calls for 12 months
-2.94
Apr 08 Credit 03 of 12 - free evening and weekend calls for 12 months
-2.94
May 08 Credit 04 of 12 - free evening and weekend calls for 12 months
-2.94
Total -£11.76
Anyone know for certain how this works ??
Not sure why the discount isnt applied just for each month, like I thought it would be.

For anyone interested then the above IS how it works.
They give you credit for quartely option 2 evening calls (sort of up front) then future bills you get charged the full option 2 costs. Just means the 1st month of every quarter to me will feel like a FREE month but the next 3 slightly higher....if you see what I mean.
