Best network for wireless computer access?
mentalmummy

I`m building an in car computer and want to have internet access for route planning, internet radio and weather updates.

Can anyone recommend a good mobile phone provider that has a decent, preferably not extortionately high, internet access option whereby a pc can use their service to access the internet?

Also preferably with good coverage of south Wales!

Not the cheapest but very reliable option from Orange.

12/18 Month is £25 with a free USB Dongle.

24 Month is £20 with a free USB Dongle.

Upto 7.2Mbps, and unlimited downloads (FUP: 3GB).

Unless the direct offer is different to the retail one, you also need to add VAT that £25. Not sure about the 24 month offering.

Either T-mobile web and walk or 3 with the mobile broadband, coverage wise in wales im not sure check with the companies websites, over the next year t-mobile and 3 will be sharing 3g cellsites and therefore have the best 3g coverage.

I use t-mobile web and walk plus added onto my current tarrif its 12.50 on top of my tariff so i pay £32.50 altogether and can use it with my pc , my wife on the other hand is with 3 and uses her phone as a modem as well as and has the broadband £10 a month add on. I get 3gb she get 1gb.

Dont even touch orange or o2 the data tariffs are overpriced and have stupidly small limits (last i checked it was 300mb).

Not sure about vodafone though they do data tarriffs and have just reduced them quite a bit but honestly dont know by how much.

I have 3 on my mobile but I cannot even get their web access here as it always says I am outside the coverage area (their call coverage, minus internet, is great though except that call centre in India and the four or five calls at home each week trying to flog me 3 products!).

I think vodaphone sound good so far or T Mobile. There is a service where you can get internet via radio signals (genuine, not a joke) but that is not available in my area so can`t get that.

Thanks for the suggestions and any new ones welcome

12/18 month plan is £29 for consumers on Internet Everywhere option and £20 on 24 month plan, both prices include VAT.

Orange and T-Mobile both offer 3GB allowance on a fair usage policy for £20/month so if you go over your limit you won't be charged unless you are abusing the service.

3 is 3GB allowance for £15/month but usage over this is charged at 10p a MB, they are also different to the other networks as it doesn't work in a 2G area, the other providers do, just at a slower speed.

Vodafone is 3GB a month and is on promotion at £15/month, out of usage charged at £15 a GB!

I live in Pontypridd and Orange has the best coverage in South Wales with 3G been available in most places.

Cool, I live not too far away near Maerdy so Orange should be fine in my area as well. Will look into that!

Thanks for the ideas

If you want to take it out ring 0800 079 8000, Orange have just released the new Options Icon 225 Globetrotter USB Modem which is smaller compared to the old one.

Hi,

Vodafone offer 3GB per month for £15 per month including VAT. This is a permanent offering and not a short term offer.

The price of the USB or PCMCIA card you go for depends on the contract length, and whether or not you go for the card that supports up to 7.2Mbps HSDPA speed.

Over the 3GB it does cost £15 per extra GB, which does sound like a lot until you work out that's around 1.5p per MB.

You can see the card options available at the Vodafone website here.

I hope you decide to join us,

edwardpeter

It's still a lot when you think about the fact that as soon as you go over the 3GB you are smacked with £15 whether you use all that GB or not.

The USB Modem is £33.19 + VAT on a 24 month with Vodafone, £67.23 on an 18 month contract and a £101.28 on a 12 month contract.

So really where is the saving being made there? It can actually cost you more money than on Orange where all the options include a free USB Modem. If you use below the 3GB then fair enough, but go over and it becomes very pricey.

With Orange even if you go for the 12 month contract the USB Modem is free.

Swings and roundabouts to me.

didnt realise orange had improved their data deals , one of the reasons i switched was the dreadful data deals.

Tmobile do web and walk plus with modem for £20 a month if you take out a 24month contract only limit is no voip(skype etc) the limit is 3gb but no charge if you go over just a warning to reduce your usage or upgrade to web and walk plus which is £35per month.

Web and walk is very reliable but again check coverage.
