Favourite Lyrics
What are your favourite lyrics and if you can think of a reason why do you like them?
Here are a few for starters: Radiohead - Paranoid Android "When I am King you will be first against the wall" The image that power corrupts. Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head "Im going to buy this place and start a fire, stand here till I fill all your hearts desires" The entire song is kind of sinister Sheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do I love the entire song you could almost be in the bar at noon on Tuesday! |

Alice Cooper's Poison:
I wanna love you But I better not touch I wanna hold you But my senses tell me to stop I wanna kiss you But I want it too much and ...... I wanna hurt you Just to hear you screaming my name Coldplay's Yellow: Your skin Oh yeah your skin and bones Turn into something beautiful But you You know I love you so The whole of Eric Clapton's Tears In Heaven The whole of Evanescence's Bring me to Life, but especially: How can you see into my eyes like open doors Leading you down into my core Where I've become so numb Without a soul my spirit's sleeping somewhere cold Until you find me there and lead it back home The whole of Evanescence's My Immortal The whole of Savage Garden's Affirmation Shakira's Underneath Your Clothes: Underneath your clothes Theres an endless story There's the man I chose Thats my territory This song means a lot to me at the moment

Silenced Is it a possibility, That we're all just equal? Slap the power down (Abusing) Oh doesn't it p!ss you off, To be beaten at your own game? You lead us with false morals And shelter reality! (No more) We're not buying your product but you sell it to us preaching silence! Insult me in my home Where you were never invited World So Cold When passion's lost And all the trust is gone Way too far For way too long Children crying Cast out and neglected Only in a world so cold Only in a world this cold Hold the hand of your best friend Look into their eyes Then watch them drift away Some might say We've done the wrong things For way too long |

A very political song. But the lyrics are based on a true story and are quite emotive.
Its by a folk singer called 'Harvey Andrews' and was first released in the early seventies. 'The Soldier' In a station in the city, a British soldier stood Talking to the people there, if the people would Some just stared in hatred, and others turned in pain and the lonely British soldier wished he was back home again Come join the British Army! said the posters in his town See the world and have your fun, come serve before the Crown The jobs were hard to come by and he could not face the dole So he took his country's shilling and enlisted on the roll For there was-no fear of fighting, the Empire long was lost Just ten years in the Army getting paid for being bossed Then leave a man experienced, a man who's made the grade A medal and a pension, some memories and a trade Then came the call for Ireland as the call had come before Another bloody chapter in an endless civil war The priests they stood on both sides, the priests they stood behind Another fight in Jesus' name, the blind against the blind The soldier stood between them, between the whistling stones And then the broken bottles that led to broken bones The petrol bombs that burnt his hands, the nails that pierced his skin And wished that he had stayed at home surrounded by his kin The station filled with people, the soldier soon was bored But better in the station, than where the people war'ed The room filled up with mothers, with daughters and with sons Who stared with itchy fingers at the soldier and his gun A yell of fear, a screech of brakes, the shattering of glass The window of the station broke to let the package pass A scream came from the mothers as they ran towards the door Dragging children crying from the bomb upon the floor The soldier stood and could not move, his gun he could not use He knew the bomb had seconds and not minutes on the fuse He could not run and pick it up, and throw it in the street There were far too many people there, too many running feet Take cover! yelled the soldier, Take cover for your lives And the Irishmen threw down their young and stood before their wives They turned towards the soldier, their eyes alive with fear For God's sake save our children or they'll end their short lives here The soldier moved towards the bomb his stomach like a stone Why was this his battle? God? why was he alone? He lay down on the package and he murmured one farewell To those at home in England, to those he loved so well He saw the sights of summer, felt the wind upon his brow The young girls in the city parks, how precious were they now The soaring of the swallow the beauty of the swan The music of the turning world, so soon would it be gone A muffled soft explosion and the room began to quake The soldier blown across the floor, his blood a crimson lake There was no time to cry or shout, there was no time to moan And they turned their children's faces from the blood and from the bones The crowd outside soon gathered and the ambulances came To carry off the body of a pawn lost in the game And the crowd they clapped and cheered and they sang their rebel song One soldier less to interfere where he did not belong And will the children growing up learn at their mothers' knees The story of the soldier who bought their liberty Who used his youthful body as a means towards an end Who gave his life to those, who called him 'murderer' not 'friend' Harvey Andrews (Vocals and Acoustic Guitar) |

Repeat * I'm gonna kiss ya from ya head 2 ya toes and then I'm gonna lick ya where you'd love me to go, yeah! Oil ya skin within hold ya tight Yeah, I butter the toast If U lick the knife And take a shower Maybe bubble the bath I'll wash yours, U wash mine Yeah, we'll have a good laugh I'll be the sponge, the sponge The sponge that wets U down Then I'll be the towel upon Your naked body, wrapped around And then as our game comes 2 an end We'll start again Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah |

Nick Cave, The Ship Song
We'd talk about it all night long We' define our moral ground But when I crawl into your arms It all comes tumbling down Come sail your ships around me And burn your bridges down We make a little history, baby Every time you come around Come loose your dogs upon me And let your hair hang down You are a little mystery to me Every time I call around Your face is fallen sad now For you know the time is right When I must remove your wings And you, you must try to fly The Smiths, A Rush And A Push She said, "There's too much caffine in you blood stream And a lack of real spice in your life" The Smiths, Stech Out And Wait Two icy cold hands conducting the way It's the eskimo blood in my veins Whipping Boy, When We Were Young When we were young nobody died And nobody got older The toughest kid on the street Could always be bought over The Pixies, Where Is My Mind With your feet on the air and your head on the ground Try this trick and spin it............................................Yeah! Your head'll colapse and when there's nothing in it You'll ask yourself Where is my mind? |

I like the lyrics from NOFX's album (The War Against Errorism)
"I never thought about the universe, it made me feel so small, I never thought about the problems on this planet at all, Global warming and radioactive sites, The imperialistic wrongs and animal rights, NO!" Quite political but shows what we are doing to the world I suppose, thi song has a good riff to it aswell. |

All the words to Something Inside So Strong
The higher you build your barriers The taller I become The further you take my rights away The faster I will run You can deny me, you can decide To turn your face away No matter 'cause there's Something inside so strong I know that I can make it Though you're doing me wrong, so wrong You thought that my pride was gone, oh no There's something inside so strong Oh oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, something inside so strong The more you refuse to hear my voice (ooh-weh ooh-weh ooh-weh ooh-weh) The louder I will sing You hide behind walls of Jericho (ooh-weh ooh-weh ooh-weh ooh-weh) Your lies will come tumbling Deny my place in time, you squander wealth that's mine My light will shine so brightly it will blind you Because there's Something inside so strong I know that I can make it Though you're doing me wrong, so wrong You thought that my pride was gone, oh no There's something inside so strong Oh oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, something inside so strong Brothers and sisters, when they insist we're just not good enough Well we know better, just look him in his eyes and say We're gonna do it anyway, we're gonna do it anyway We're gonna do it anyway, we're gonna do it anyway Because there's Something inside so strong I know that I can make it Though you're doing me wrong, so wrong You thought that my pride was gone, oh no, oh no There's something inside so strong Something inside so strong I know that I can make it Though you're doing me wrong, so wrong You thought that my pride was gone, oh no, oh no There's something inside so strong Oh oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, something inside so strong (Oh oh oh) oh oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, something inside so strong Oh oh-oh-oh-oh, something inside so strong |

Great stuff It always made me laugh whenever I heard Kirsty Maccoll's take on that song as it was always going to be a thankless task for her - turning Billy's ''I'm just looking for another girl'' line into ''are you looking for another girl?'' never quite fitted in with the original theme of the song somehow

Boxcar Racer - I Feel So:
"Sometimes, I wish I was brave I wish I was stronger I wish I could feel no pain I wish I was young I wish I was shy I wish I was honest I wish I was you not I Cause I feel so mad I feel so angry Feel so callused So lost Confused again..." Boxcar Racer - There Is: "...The days have come and gone Our lives when but so fast" "Do you care if I don't know what to say Would you sleep tonight or will you think of me Will I shake this off Pretend it's all okay That there's someone out there who feels just like me There is..." Blink 182 - Adam's Song: "I'm too depressed to go on You'll be sorry when I'm gone... I never conquered, rarely came 16 just held such better days Days when I stll felt alive... I can't wait till I get home To pass the time in my room alone." Blink 182 - What Went Wrong: "I'm sick of always hearing All those sad songs on the radio All day it is there to remind An over-sensitive guy, That he's lost and alone..." |

There are loads of lyrics that I love.
The Smiths - and if a double-decker bus crashes into us to die by your side such a heavenly way to die and if a ten ton truck kills the both of us to die by your side the pleasure and the privilege is mine. I don't want to talk about it - can tell by your eyes that you've probably been crying forever, and the stars in the sky don't mean nothing to you, they're a mirror. I don't want to talk about it, how you broke my heart. If I stay here just a little bit longer, If I stay here, won't you listen to my heart, my heart? If I stand all alone, will the shadow hide the color of my heart; blue for the tears, black for the night's fears. The star in the sky don't mean nothing to you, they're a mirror. I don't want to talk about it, how you broke my heart. If I stay here just a little bit longer, if I stay here, won't you listen to my heart, my heart? I want you, by Elvis Costello h my baby baby I love you more than I can tell I don't think I can live without you And I know that I never will Oh my baby baby I want you so it scares me to death I can't say anymore than "I love you" Everything else is a waste of breath I want you You've had your fun you don't get well no more I want you Your fingernails go dragging down the wall Be careful darling you might fall I want you I woke up and one of us was crying I want you You said "Young man I do beleive you're dying" I want you If you need a second opinion as you seem to do these days You can look in my eyes and you can count the ways I want you Did you mean to tell me but seem to forget I want you Since when were you so generous and inarticulate I want you It's the stupid details that my heart is breaking for It's the way your shoulders shake and what they're shaking for I want you it's knowing that he knows you now after only guessing It's the thought of him undressing you or you undressing I want you He tossed some tatty compliment your way I want you And you were fool enough to love it when he said "I want you" I want you The truth can't hurt you it's just like the dark It scares you witless But in time you see things clear and stark I want you Go on and hurt me then we'll let it drop I want you I'm afraid I won't know where to stop I want you I'm not ashamed to say I cried for you I want you I want to know the things you did that we do too I want you I want to hear he pleases you more than I do I want you I might as well be useless for all it means to you I want you Did you call his name out as he held you down I want you Oh no my darling not with that clown I want you You've had your fun you don't get well no more I want you No-one who wants you could want you more I want you Every night when I go off to bed and when I wake up I want you I want you I'm going to say it again 'til I instill it I know I'm going to feel this way until you kill it I want you I want you Cheerful soul aren't I!!!! |

There a loads of great lyrics in Marillion/Fish songs, but here are three of my favourites:
From their anti-Nazi 1987 song "White Russian": The more I see, the more I hear, the more I find fewer answers I close my mind, I shout it out, but you know it's getting harder To calm down, to reason out, to come to terms with what it's all about I'm uptight, can't sleep at night, I can't pretend everything's alright My ideals, my sanity, it seems that they're deserting me But to stand up and fight I know we have six million reasons The heralds of the holocaust The silence never louder than now, how quickly we forgot our vows This resurrection we can't allow Are we sitting on a barbed wire fence? You can shut your eyes, you can hide it away, it's gonna come back another day From their 1987 song "The Last Straw": We live our lives in private shells Ignore our senses and fool ourselves To thinking that out there there's someone else cares Someone to answer all our prayers From Fish's anti-domestic violence song "Family Business": When I see you at the supermarket, sunglasses in the shade Averting your eyes from those staring questions, how were those bruises made? The children clutch tight to your legs, they've got so much they want to say But Daddy's sitting home, drunk again so they bite their lips and pray 'Cause Daddy don't like people prying, poking in his family affairs And if anyone asks from the social, well, you fell down the stairs It's family business, keep it in the family business Can you tell me how long it remains family business? It's nobody's business, this family business But tell me how long it should stay family business |
