The magic numbers have to be other Orange phones.

Yeah that's the only stipulation but they can be Orange PAYG or Orange PAYM.

For what it's worth, my experience with 3.

I was on an 18 month contract with them last year, coming towards the end of it i wanted a different phone. I don't know what it is but the 3 sim cards don't like working on other handsets as standard. I was after a pda / qwerty style phone. So, i called them, said i was thinking of leaving for a "better" provider and i wanted a different phone, they offered to halve my line rental "forever" and gave me a Nokia E61. 350 minutes + 750 texts + £5 downloads + 25 mms + Video all for £13 a month.

£13 a month. I decided to stay.

(i don't work for 3 but thought what i wanted out of a phone, twas a no brainer for me)

Thats a brill deal!! Id be up for that for sure! So did u speak to retentions (as in wanting to leave) or go to the upgrade centre on the phone? Being in month 15 i wasnt sure how good my bargaining power would be, even though they are letting me upgrade at this point. Should i wait two months or is it negligible?

It was around upgrade time. I don't know if that was month 17 or 18, think it was 17. I was talking to the upgrade center talking about my needs for a phone (qwerty keyboard) and that i felt 3 wasn't the right provider for me as you just cant easily put a 3 sim in any old phone, e.g. pda's etc. I think they offered me the E61 as it's, comparitivly, an old phone but more than meets my needs. If you stay, they told me, we'll halve your current line rental for as long as you wish to stay with us. ( i was paying £25pcm)

Ok, so they've stiffed me out of 50p.

Try bargaining with them, it's always worth a try, but i'd wait until you are due an upgrade.
