Samsung Sim Lock Feature

Does anyone know how I can get this off? My wife has just been given a Samsung D600 by a friend. Whenever you turn it on you are asked for a SIM Lock Password.
The person who gave it to the wife has no idea about what the password is.
Anyone have any ideas on how to get`this off?

Thanks for these, but have tried both with no luck. Have also tried the code for a full restore to factory settings - the only thing that did was change the language to German!!

This error of course means that the handset has been instructed to ask for a code generated by the user. The only thing you can do is call Samsung for the handset to be reset.
