I feel sorry for the poor mugs who bought an HD DVD player. Do they get their money back?

Folkestone is still selling HD DVDs.

I don't consider myself a mug, I have a excellent player and HD movies not Blu-ray owner has access too yet.
Disappointed overall but not angry either, looking forward to boosting my HD DVD collection with some uber bargains over the next couple of months

You may get them this year (Matrix and Batman Begins very likely now) but who knows, Uni and Para are not going to dump stock on the market as it undermines the cash flow.
Eventually of course I expect every HD DVD exclusive will be on Blu-ray, the HD mastering is already done so it's not a huge step to re-author for Blu-ray.
Longer term it may even be advantageous to remaster again as the market could be big enough to support the extra investment.

I would expect Transformers to be one of the first Paramount titles, it's an excellent HD product and if you have a PS3 and 1.1 player the interactive elements are worth having a look at. Of course in reality it's unlikely to look any better on Blu-ray regardless of the ramblings of Bay, you may get PCM audio of course but well how many PS3 owners really have the kit to exploit that

If she bought it that close to the Warner announcement she could easily have done what I did.

Return the HD DVD player and get a PS3 (although I did use a Bluray standalone for a few days in between the 2)

I agree.

I wanted to get into HD discs for a while and although I favoured HDDVD over Bluray I'm just glad that we can now buy into HD with confidence that BD wont be obsolete anytime soon

Argeed! Annoyed as it means were stuck with Region settings for another generation but at least it's over.

Oh and the first (currently HD-DVD only) title I'll be wanting is naturally The Matrix Trilogy. Also means Region B releases of The Terminator Trilogy perhaps??

Sorry for TOSHIBA , i like their stuff and my TV'S are TOSHIBA'S but the format war needed sorting out and now let's get the movies out quickly and cheaply, high street prices are ridiculous.

Will this mean that retailers will be selling the players/movies at greatly reduced prices to clear stock.

I can picture it now:

Play.com sale all HD movies - £2.99

Deal of the Day Toshiba HD-EP30 HD DVD Player - only £19.99

I sold my 360 HD-DVD Drive and discs off a week after Warner announced they were going Blu.

Looks like it will be when rather than if Paramount and Universal move to Blu-Ray.

I got myself a good cheaper HD DVD player, mostly for the upscaling & was not going to buy any movies until the war was decided.

I paid £120, & will get a BR player when they are £100-£150 so for the folk who now have BR players & have paid £250+ then I feel I haven't lost out at all. In fact im quite happy to just stay with the upscaling of Sd DVDs for quite a while.

I'm not. Proper HD is so much better.

It will be interesting to see if toshiba have given up or if they have been wooed by blu ray, ie have been offered blu ray royalties.

I personally think there was a golden hand shake after the ces show, toshiba, uni and paramount all said nothing and no new catalouge titles were/have been announced.

I wouldn't say that, there's already been some legal action bought in the US over the lack of features on Blu-ray players that some manufactures claimed they had and Blu-ray conversions of films released originally on HD DVD has been appalling. I doubt we'll see Blu-ray releases of The Matrix trilogy or The Bourne Ultimatum just yet since if we did they would be poor substitues in comparision.

If anything the closure of the HD DVD plant probably puts back HD take up by at least twelve months until Blu-ray technology gets up to the stage where HD DVD left off.

What rubbish, wheres your evidence?, Bluray equivalents are as good if not superior and as an example i've watched 300 and the Harry Potter movies on both formats. If there's any quality issues it's down to the encoding or film studio.

And did you watch all the extra's on Harry Potter on Blu-ray? I don't think you did some how! There's been a lot of complaints that as soon as a film is released on Blu-ray that was previously released on HD DVD that a some of the extra features vanish. This is manly due to the fact that films on Blu-ray were previously released in 1.0 profile or 1.1 and to match HD DVD they would need to be released on profile 2.0 which is not currently in production.

What has any of that got to do with the Samsung class action or whether Bluray will be here to stay?

The Samsung class action is simply due to one of their earlier players being crap and having compatability issues with a number of (profile 1.0) discs - it has nothing to do with profiles at all. And in any case, class actions often come to nothing anyway - there are a number currently involving the Xbox 360 for example!

Furthermore there are already profile 1.1 and 2.0 enhanced discs available - just no players currently released that will take advantage of the BD-live ones (until the PS3 gets it's profile 2.0 upgrade anyway). Earlier transfers did indeed not include some extras that the HD DVD versions had, but that will basically not be an issue any more, and the PQ is generally identical between releases on both formats.

The Matrix Trilogy is already confirmed as coming later this year (along with the complete Batman anthology) - and Bourne will be dependent on how soon Universal move to support Bluray. It seems that Paramount are already gearing up to return as both Transformers and Blades of Glory have been spotted in Circuit City's internal database, complete with consistent UPC numbering.
